Still feeling optimistic - Fisico

The Italian ING Renault F1 Team driver, Giancarlo Fisichella, who is starting ninth on the Canadian grid, knows that a tough race awaits him, but he is confident of a good finish. The Roman will try to finish in the points.

Giancarlo, what do you think about today’s qualifying session?

"I’ve got mixed feelings. The car was really well-balanced this morning and I had the same feel as on Friday. I felt confident with the car, which is vital on a circuit like Montreal, and I found it very good to drive. In the first two rounds of qualifying I set very competitive times, and I still had a bit more to come at that moment. Unfortunately, I made two mistakes on my flying lap at the end of the third part, and I couldn’t do any better than ninth. It’s frustrating as we could have been at least three places further up the grid."

Is there reason to remain optimistic for tomorrow?

"Of course. I’m certain we’ll leave Canada with some points. Our strategy seems like the good one, and the car’s performing well on the tyres that will be used for most of the race tomorrow."

Will they be hard or soft?

"The hard tyre, I think. It’s not just Renault making that choice. I think that most of the teams will do the same."

In Canada, there are generally quite a few upsets...

"Exactly. Incidents in the first corner are not uncommon and you have to avoid collisions. The safety car also comes out frequently here, and if this is the case we’ll have to take full advantage of it. So I’m optimistic despite everything."
