Champ Car GP of Arizona cancelled

The Champ Car Grand Prix of Arizona, scheduled for the beginning December, will be cancelled from the calendar. The race in Phoenix would be the final round of the season, but now this honour is for Mexico City.

In a statement released to the media, race organisers Dale Jensen and Bradley Yonover said: "An event of this magnitude requires considerable corporate support and though we did establish some outstanding partnerships, there were simply not enough of these to create economic viability.

"On behalf of my partner, Brad Yonover, and our staff that has worked so hard on this project, we thank everyone throughout the community - and in particular the City of Phoenix - for their tremendous support along the way.

"Unfortunately, current economic turmoil and the impact it has had on our sponsors precludes us from being able to produce the caliber of event we had envisioned."

This means that there are only three races left in the 2007 season, the race at Assen, Surfers Paradise and Mexico City. Only three opportunities left for Robert Doornbos and Will Power to try and catch up with Sebastien Bourdais, who is leading the Championship.
