2007: Cars must be fitted with a red, blue and yellow cockpit LED for the track information system;
A medical warning light at the cockpit is obligatory to inform marshalls of the severity of an accident.

2009: KERS warning light required to inform marshalls if a KERS is charged

2003: Changed points system: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1

Cars may not be refuelled between qualifying and race

Team orders are prohibited.

2004: each driver must select his wet- and dry-weather compound before second qualifying.

2005: Tyre switching during the race forbidden, except for safety reasons.

2006: Tyre changes allowed again.

2008: Strict limitations concerning CFD and wind tunnel testing;
Single tyre supplier appointed by the FIA

Technical regulations (chassis)
2002
Power assisted steering systems must be controlled mechanically - no electronic control is allowed. This is the final step to the changes introduced in Barcelona 2001 - changes to avoid the necessity to carry out software inspections following a race;
The rear crash structure is subjected to a substantial side load - the same principal as the front crash structure;
Wheel tethers are stronger;
Mirrors are larger;
The rear light is larger.
2004
Minimum size set of rear wing end plates and engine cover to allow more sponsor space;
Launch control forbidden;
Full-automatic gearboxes forbidden.
2005
Reduction of diffuser size to reduce cornering speeds
2007
Obligatory rear wing gap spacer to prevent flexing;
Increased strenght requirements for rear crash structure
2008
The FIA provides a standard and equal ECU to all teams which must be used in the cars to monitor and control all electronic systems;
Traction control banned
2009
Front wing: max. width increased to 180mm, minimum height reduced to 75mm, middle section of 250mm design specified by FIA;
Allowance of movable front wing flap adjuster. Maximum 6degrees of adjustement, fully uperated by the driver from his steering wheel; Diffuser max height reduced to 200mm;
Winglets and aerodynamic additions on sidepods banned;
Driver-operated moveable aerodynamics allowed in front wing. Limited to 2 adjustements per lap, max 6° change in angle of attack.

Technical regulations (engine - weight)
2004
3000cc engine that must last a complete race weekend. Replacing an engine costs the driver 10 places on the grid. Replacing one after second qualifying is equal to a start from the back of the grid.

Minimum weight: 605 kg during each
qualifying practice session and no less than 600 kg at all other times during the Event.(including driver and fuel)

900 hp at 18500+ rpm (2003 BAR Honda 006)

Air ducts for front and rear brake cooling may not be higher than 160mm above the centre line of the wheel, and not be lower than 160mm below the wheel centre line.

2005
Engines must last 2 complete race weekends.
2006-2007
2400cc engine with 8 cylinders in a 90° V bank, each one with 2 inlet and 2 outlet valves. An engine must weigh at least 95kg,
mainly limited to be built with Aluminium alloys (with ceramics, metal matrix and magnesium alloys forbidden). Variable geometry intake and output systems forbidden.

750 hp at 19000+ rpm (Toyota)

2008
2400cc engine with 8 cylinders in a 90° V bank. Regulations identical to those set since 2006. Engines are homologated by the FIA and development is freezed for 10 years (later changed).
Therefore, because of a WMSC decision on 7 December 2007, no engine other than those available at 31 March 2008 can compete in an F1 event between 2008 and 2017.
2009
Each driver is allowed the use of 8 engines during a season. A new engine will cost 10 grid places.
Maximum engine revolutions limited to 18000 rpm.
Kinetic energy recovery systems (KERS) are allowed and used.

During both sessions all teams, other than those who finished in the top four positions of the previous year's World Championship for Constructors, will be permitted to run a third car provided any driver of this car:

  • is not one of the team's nominated drivers for the Event in question;
  • is in possession of a Super Licence;
  • has not taken place in more than six World Championship Events during the two previous World Championships.

14.00 Qualifying begins and will be run as follows:

  • the session will be held in two parts separated by two minutes;
  • during the first part each driver will carry out a single timed lap as now starting in the order they finished in the previous race. At the first race of the year the order of the last Event of the previous year's World Championship will be used (in both cases any new drivers will be arranged in numerical order);
  • any car stopping in the first part will not be allowed to take part in the second, if the car is brought back to the pits before the end of the session it must remain in parc fermé until the end of the session;
  • refuelling rigs will be allowed in the first part subject to everyone wearing suitable clothing and photographers being restricted as for a race;
  • the running order for the second part will be determined by the times achieved in the first part reversed;
  • cars will run with race fuel and race settings as in 2003.

Identical to 2004, except for qualifying that takes place at 13.00 and includes only one run for each car, thereby scrapping the second part of the 2004 qualifying format.

  • From 14.20 to 14.35 the fifteen remaining cars will be permitted on the track and at the end of this period the slowest five cars, taking into account only laps which were completed before the end of the period, will be prohibited from taking any further part in the session.
    Lap times achieved by the ten remaining cars will then be deleted.
  • From 14.40 to 15.00 the ten remaining cars will be permitted on the track.
    The above procedure is based upon a Championship entry of 20 cars. If 22 are entered six cars will be excluded after each of the previous periods and, if 24 are entered, six cars will be excluded after each of the previous periods leaving 12 cars eligible.

  • From 14.27 to 14.42 (Q2) the seventeen remaining cars will be permitted on the track and at the end of this period the slowest seven cars will be prohibited from taking any further part in the session. Lap times achieved by the ten remaining cars will then be deleted.
  • From 14.50 to 15.00 (Q3) the ten remaining cars will be permitted on the track.
    The above procedure is based upon a Championship entry of 24 cars. If 22 cars are entered only six cars will be excluded after Q1 and Q2.
