Team trailers

Post

There an article on the engineering trailers used by Honda/Brawn/Mercedes, where they join two together to make a big open plan upstairs layout, very cool.

I was wondering if these are also used to transport the cars, or purely for the engineering use? If they were and other teams have them also, the paddock area must get awfully crowded....:)

Who makes them and how many mortgages do they need to take out to pay for them? ha, ha.

Hi Grano,

I can't really offer too much insight in to the current Mercedes Units. I believe these to be different units to the ones that Brawn/Honda. I think USF1 "bought" them and so they ended up on ebay once they folded.

I was fortunate enough to have a wander round the two Honda pop up units and no, I'm pretty sure they didn't transport the cars.

I also used to work at the coach builders that built the Ferrari Hospitality unit, I was working on a different vehicle at the time, which was heading over to Euro 2008 to film the Football, but this Ferrari unit was something else. From memory I think it was six lorries that stack on top of each other to make this..

One of the tractor units has a lifting arm on the back and so once it rocks up to Barcelona or wherever it starts lifting off the "pods" on the back.

The rumour was that it was worth £2million but you get rumours like that around factories. It could have been more it could have been less. One thing that I do know is that it was funded by Marlboro, who were so pleased with the first one that they ordered a second. Which is why there are two in the picture (the one in the foreground is the newer of the two). They also funded the Ducati Hospitality units but they're far more modest. Image

Sorry to resurrect an old post, but I've ended up on this website looking for info on trailers, but I can answer some of your questions.

These trailer don't normally carry the cars, they are to full of technical stuff. There is also another advantage in doing this as the Engineers trailers have to get to the circuit quite early in the week to be parked up and set-up. I think it was on Tuesday for F1, I was working on a support series.

The car trailer can leave later, leaving more time to tinker with the car.
Basically in motorsport it doesn't matter if the mechy's get 5 hours or 5 weeks they'll still want to finish something off when you want to put the car in the truck.
This trailer might not actually end up being packed in the paddock, but in a compound somewhere else on the circuit with all the other trucks that carry the gear need to set-up the Garage.

Considering a decent trailer with double side pop-out for the office would be around the £250,000+ mark, I should think those trailers come in at £500,000+ each, depending on the spec.

There are a few companies that make these trailers.
including
JS Frasers in Oxford (I think they gone out business though) They made Bernies motorhome amongst other things. Schuler and Bischoff Scheck in Germany, ASGB in Colchester built the Ferrari Hospitality unit.
Other are Brooklandspeed, WHF, and Hopkins although I don't know if they've done any for the F1 teams.

Hi all,

i worked for some builders specialized in racing/hospitality trailers: previous Ferrari F1 box trailers (where engineer and technician work) were builted by JS Fraser (http://www.oscoachbuilders.co.uk/), some others by Franzisella S.p.A. (http://www.franzisella.it). The two TOV (Tower Hospitality Vip or F1 Hospitality Suite) were builted by ASGB (http://www.asgb.co.uk) and i know the price but.....
I hope to see more posts with the same object..."Team Trailers"...

Hi Thanks for the link to Oxford Specialist Coachbuilder, seems to be JS Fraser resurrected. Which I'm pleased about as they seemed to build some of the better motorsport trailers and I'm still looking so it gives me another option.

The transporters trailer is normally one of the biggest purchases for a team, so a lot of thought and research has to go into it.

And whilst we're naming trailer builders, I forgot to mention Bense. http://www.whbence.co.uk

It's JS Fraser, i'm sure.
If you need some other info, i'm at your disposal.
In my new website, i'll collect all builders address and all new truck/trailer/motorhome/hospitality.
Anyone has info or web link?
Thanks in advance,
Marco

Talking about transporters / team trailers - this is how they did it back in the days.

Cool pictures Stefan. I love how far back the front wheels are on the Mercedes truck. Looks like it would tip forward when the car is taken off the back lol

After Mercedes-Benz withdrew from motor sports at the end of 1955, the 'Blue Wonder' initially served as an exhibition vehicle in the USA, followed by ten years of service for Mercedes-Benz test drives. Unfortunately, Rudolf Uhlenhaut, who managed the motor sports department during the racing car carriers' "active" period, had the one-off model scrapped in 1967.

However, decades later, Mercedes-Benz rebuilt this stunning racing car hauler based on archive photographs.
