The handling of the track limits thing is a nonsense. We all know that these, the best drivers in the world, can keep the cars in the track limits. Monaco, Baku, Singapore... They all are examples of this skill. If they do make a mistake at these tracks it has serious consequences, at least at most of the corners.

So, notwithstanding Hollus' sig, here's a simple solution. In qualifying and the race the race officials will monitor some corners on a random schedule.

If you are seen to leave the track in qualifying, time deleted.

If you are seen to leave the track in the race you are demoted one place. Slow down till you are passed. If you don't do that in one lap from the instruction, you lose another place, and so on. This stops a driver fighting on to prevent a rival from moving ahead to challenge for the next place up the road.

Place demotions can be applied retrospectively at the end of the race if necessary.

No need for kerbs, grass, gravel or any other inhibitor to off track lines. Stay on the track and you won't be disadvantaged.

Which racing line are you talking about here?

Here´s an illustration of the actual racing line around Turn 3 and the line that Verstappen took roughly as seen through the various videos of the incident.

The only time that Verstappen is actually on the racing line is when he´s right at the apex, long after the actual incident.

I think you have just stuck your finger in the heart of the problem: the rules do not specify what the racing line is.

In my head, it is towards the outside before the corner (no one says that it has to be all the way to the outside), then towards the inside in the middle of the corner (again, driver chooses how close to the apex and where the apex is), then towards the outside at the exit of the corner.

But, alas, that isn't codified anywhere, and thus your definition of the racing line as per that picture is as good as mine or as anybody else. So your yellow line after the number "1" is not part of "your" racing line but it part of "my" racing line.

Incompetent rules, really.

They don´t define change of direction either but he clearly makes two moves before turning into the corner.

If we´re playing that game then we can toss out parapgraph 27 out of the sporting regulations.

Even:
"For the avoidance of doubt, if any part of the front wing of the car attempting to pass is
alongside the rear wheel of the car in front this will be deemed to be a ‘significant portion’"
There´s no definition of what alongside is. Or part, what´s a part, a carbon molecule?
