I'm not sure what you are asking about here. Mufflers can restrict the flow out of an engine therefore hindering performance yet the car can be illegal without them. Noise limits at tracks.
Always find the gap then use it.

Would be nice to see straight pipes out of the engine for each cylinder but current regs don't allow it I don't mean an exhaust system to the back of he car I mean poke straight out of the engine block a couple of cm to be flush with body

so.......my first question is.....why on earth race on laguna seca then? i mean it's a cool track and all, but.....well....what the hell

I didn't know mufflers were taboo. I've seen many mufflers on race cars, but it seems to go by the racing series (ie series regulation).

Why are they all pointed to the left side? I know this will sound silly, but is the noise measured from the right side of the car?

You are right. The track runs clockwise. Sound check must surely be infield... so why point muffler infield?
Always find the gap then use it.

I'm guessing the test MIC is on the outside of a turn somewhere.
