I don't know, if it was already mentioned. Please take into consideration, that the picture in the OP is not from 2017, but from 2016!
It's also probably not a 360 cam either...

The 360 cam is just a gimmick. What views would it cover that other camera can't? Spectators or the sky? There is nothing wrong with normal cameras; the views that provide the best action shots are all from outside of the car; front, rear, either side or overhead. The current cameras that swivel only provide distorted vertigo inducing shots that tend to mangle understanding of the action.
There is no need for a new camera, especially if it isn't exactly pretty.

I've not heard any indication yet of what Liberty Media plan to do with footage from these proposed cameras, they do seem to have been a lot more open and forward thinking with their media this year. For example they've put together some really nice edits for their YouTube channel.

While the 360 cam might not appear great for mid-race footage, or frankly for any viewing back on a typical screen with the distortion, the playback from these cameras is a lot more compelling when viewed with a VR headset. With the lens placed just ahead of the steering wheel or as close to the driver's helmet as possible, LM could make clips available to let you watch back a pole lap or selected highlights like overtaking moves or race starts 'from the drivers seat'.

That would actually be interesting viewing.

Sorry to resurrect this, but what happened to this idea?

And why have a mechanical rotating 360 camera at all?

There are systems that use double fish eye cameras that -capture- 360 degree views. An infinite number of viewers can then choose different views simultaneously.

They had this technology back in 2001 (Interactive Pictures iPIX v-movies)
F1 car width now 2.0m (same as 1993-1997). Lets go crazy and bring the 2.2m cars back (<1992).

Next years F1 cars will feature 360° cameras. They will be mounted on the chassis - right in front of the Halo. Mandatory on all cars.

who is in charge of this stuff!!!
I absulutely don't get why someone is pissed about this... In the long term this should provide us with amazing 360 degree VR content. Bring it on Liberty!

I also think the final implementation will be much less "invasiv".
