2018 Driver Helmets

Post

As the 2017 year and season is done and dusted, here's one for this season.

I'm really fond of Alonso's non-F1 helmets, and his Daytona helmet looks really cool

let's hope he'll use this helmet design too for the 2018 F1 season :P

This is even better than his Indy helmet and his Indy helmet was 10x better than his F1 model.

It's called simplicity. Look back at the likes of Graham and Damon Hill, David Coulthard and of course Ayrton Senna amongst many others and you'll see equally simplistic designs that are considered classics these days.
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Looks like they're both jumping on the "White is the new black" train :)
Anyway, you never know that Alonso may use a similar design in F1 this season... perhaps this, but with white being replaced by Oviedo blue? In F1 though, it very much depends on sponsors as well, because half the helmet is covered with sponsorship anyway, so they need to be cautious to keep the design apparent while half the helmet is labelled.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the old style designs, there's just something about this one I find a little boring.

Maybe it's the choice of colours, or more to the point the way they run around the helmet ?

I hoped for more.

I'm sure it will look better once finalised, but doesn't do much for me as is.

A lot of today's driver's helmets look like graphical diarrhea. The point (well second point) of the helmet was to easily Identify a driver, and the more complex the design the less quickly identifiable it becomes.

Elegant simplicity for me.

It could be argued that the second point of the helmet is for the driver to express some personality. The helmet paint isn't for us, it's for them.

You could say that some designs may be chosen for how identifiable they are, but I doubt it, even some of the most iconic ones seems to be chosen because the driver liked a particular style.

If a driver likes quite a chaotic lid design then so be it. I've never seen a time where helmet designs have taken away from the racing :-" and I think the intricate new age designs look quite cool. Some of Vettel's best helmets were in his Red Bull "Swap every day" era anyway

Also look at the Ferrari logo. It’s the traditional one and no the hidden Marlboro one they’ve had for a while.
