Qualification

Post

Hello members,

I was just wondering how the Qualifications work in F1.
As i see it there are three qualies and you can run as many qualies as you want. The fastest time of all the 3 qualies has pole and next the second fastest and so on? Am i right?

Because if i look at the result i see this:

Pos. Driver Team Time
1 J. Button Brawn GP 1:20.527
2 S. Vettel Red Bull 1:20.660
3 R. Barrichello Brawn GP 1:20.762
4 F. Massa Ferrari 1:20.934
5 M. Webber Red Bull 1:21.049
6 T. Glock Toyota 1:21.247
7 J. Trulli Toyota 1:21.254
8 F. Alonso Renault F1 1:21.392
9 N. Rosberg Williams 1:22.558
10 R. Kubica BMW Sauber 1:22.685
11 K. Nakajima Williams 1:20.531
12 N. Piquet jr. Renault F1 1:20.604
13 N. Heidfeld BMW Sauber 1:20.676
14 L. Hamilton McLaren 1:20.805
15 S. Buemi Scuderia Toro Rosso 1:21.067
16 K. Räikkönen Ferrari 1:21.291
17 S. Bourdais Scuderia Toro Rosso 1:21.300
18 H. Kovalainen McLaren 1:21.675
19 A. Sutil Force India F1 1:21.745
20 G. Fisichella Force India F1 1:22.204

Why are # 11-13 who have a 1:20.. placed below for example Rosberg who has a 1:22?

Thanks and have a nice race tommorrow.

It works on a knock-out system. In Q1 all the cars try to go fastest. After that session ends the slowest 5 cars get knocked out. Leaving 15 cars.
The 15 cars again race to go fastest (this is usually on fumes as well). The slowest 5 then get taken out. The remaining 10 cars have to qualify on race-fuel. They start the race with the fuel they have at the end of Q3. P11-20 can fill as much as they like.

Hope this helps

Hope i havnt came across as blunt, but thats where id start for the rules and other aspects of the sport, is the F1.coms Inside F1 glossary on their web page, just to get you started. Then for anything else, im shure lots of people here will help you out for anything you dont understand.

Thanks for the links and explanation.

Btw nice race.
But how the hell did the scuderia Ferrari team put too less fuel in Massa his car!? It was a shame to see Felipe pus his car to the limit but was ordered to let Vettel pass and in the end he had to let Alonso pass because he had to save fuel. In the end he had to park his car on the track. I hope he has 1.5KG fuel left for the FIA..
