Not if the team is also interested in the constructors championship which will count points of all races

Im liking where youre coming from there, basically if a 9th engine is used, you get a 10 place drop and a 10 point deduction as well. Gearboxes would have a 5 place drop and a 5 point penalty as well.

Would be usless i fear.

Monza update!!

Hamilton 75
Webber 74
Alonso 67
Button 67
Vettel 66
Massa 50
Rosberg 43
Kubica 42
Schumacher 15
Sutil 15
Barrichello 10
Kobayashi 6
Petrov 6
Hulkenberg 5
Liuzzi 2
DelaRosa 2
Buemi 1
Alguersuari 0

Biggest movement is that Lewis would still be leading the way. Sorry for the last race, I think I missed a calculation somewhere.

No problems mate. Interestingly in the old points system Jenson can lead the championship after Suzuka, while it's not going to happen in the new system. Vettel would be 1 3rd place off mark with the old system, while he needs more than a 2nd place in the new system. This new system is actually making the points further apart!!

I think that was the intention, too. This way higher finishes are better reflected in the standings. Or something like that.

I am still in favor of a 12-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 system with no points for finishing 9th or 10th, but hey...

What I meant is, it's not tightening up the competition, it's spreading the guys out.

I think that's the point... It's rewarding the drivers winning the races, making it harder to win a championship by just finishing on the podium.

Constructors:

Red Bull-Renault 154
McLaren-Mercedes 147
Scuderia Ferrari 128
Mercedes GP 62
Renault F1 50
Williams F1 18
Force India-Mercedes 17
BMW Sauber-Ferrari 8
STR-Ferarri 1
Lotus Cosworth 0 (Due to Kovalinen finishing P13 in Austrailia they are 10th)
Hispania-Cosworth 0 (Due to Chandhok finishing twice in P14 at Austrailia and Monaco they are above Virgin)
Virgin Cosworth 0 (A single P14 from Di Grasi isnt enough to get any higher)

In the battle of the lower teams, Japan may be a key race due to its high retirement rate. If Lotus can keep its gearbox problems in check, it could get P13 again or higher. But if Virgin want to be above Hispania, the need a P13, but ideally need a P12 of higher to get that TV money.

How can any body say the new points system isn't making a difference? Under the old one above, Button would be less than a 2nd place away from the leader whereas as he is a full race win away at the moment.

Vettel is a 2nd place and less than an 8th place off the lead now; he'd be only a 3rd away in the old system. Big difference.

Hamilton is a 2nd and 9th away; under the old system he'd be a 4th away.

Alonso is less than a 4th away now; under old, he'd be slightly worse at a 5th place away.

I think this clearly shows that race wins are favoured by the new system as under the old one, all the drivers that have won less races would be much closer to the lead than they are now, i.e. Button, Vettel and Hamilton.

You're looking at it the wrong way. Its quite apt that you chose "2nd"s in your comparison. The new system doesn't reward wins, it punishes 2nd placings.

Maybe based on the fact that after 15 races the WDC orders are identical for positions 1 thru 8?... :D

This is a tautology. The way you increase the reward for a win is by decreasing the reward for not winning.

It would have been a much better idea to actually increase the points for a win, rather than decrease it for 2nd place.
