Autonomous Cars

Post

OK,, We will have to agree to disagree about Global Warming.
How do we feel about Autonomous cars? First off I get two different spellings. Which is right. With Autonamous or Autonomous?
I don't like them. Could you have guessed?
I don't want cars to drive for me. I prefer to do it myself. I like driving and the only accident I've ever had was when someone had laid down antifreeze in the middle of a sharp turn. No one hurt only minor damage.
I don't like the cars that brake for me either as the ones I've driven are what I guess I'd call "Over Cautious". They brake when they don't really need to sometimes at the wrong times, like mid corner.

I can't wait for it to become perfected. If I could sit in the passenger seat and get work done, I'd produce a lot more in that 3 hour round trip every day...

Last year in UK we had 1,710 road deaths and 176,500 casualties of all severities, and Goodness knows how many close calls. UK is quite low in comparison and a small population.

Bring it in as soon as possible. Start with Motorways. 1 lane autonomous only as soon as possible. (although I know this is not where the high death rates are)

I have just ordered my new car, the only option I went for (other than air etc) is 'Driver assist'

2 for 1 against.
Like I said, I enjoy driving but I could see it when the freeway which is supposed to be 60mph is actually 8mph.
Most of the time it's that slow not because of actual traffic so much as people who can't merge and others who think they should be able to stop people from merging.

I do think though it will be a long long time, if ever, before it is fully covered. What about things like motorcycles?

With some of the 'terrorist threats' in cities, they are helping push it along. No one can run into crowds if they do not control the vehicle. The down side is of course jobs.

Sorry strad, but you can add me to the list of the Autonomous Automobile Appreciation Society.
The idea of getting into the back seat of the car and it driving me wherever I need to be while I actually get something productive done sounds like bliss. I also like the idea of every car on the road being aware of the other to avoid collision but also to optimise traffic flow.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE driving and riding for fun, but I hate it for general duties.

Not that they would, I'm sure, but what if 'they' judged you to be included in that group :D
Do not take it to heart, just a consideration. Some of the worst drivers I have ever known were driving instructors, so the line is blurred to say the least.

You will be outnumbered, and on multiple cameras. Your vehicle's appearance and license plate will be entered into an aggressive drivers database. The AVs in your proximity will determine your erratic behavior to be a threat and box you in to minimize risk. You will be escorted to your location by a halo of AVs whenever sufficient traffic density presents. The swarms will take whatever actions are necessary to maximize the safety of their clientele.

I love being chauffeured around and the back seat is the only place to be.
If you're talking about a passenger sitting in the front to take control in an emergency then I have to ask WTF is the point of an autonomous vehicle??
Is this the part where we start to analyse the statistical data for what is the major contributor to accidents. I'm not even going to look it up. I believe the answer, as is so often the case when it comes to f'ing things up, will be human error.

Just imagine, less traffic jams and if you are in one, just hang back and wait. No more hours of boring motorways with overtaking truck drivers.

I’ll take it!

And I’m pretty sure that it won’t take long when a computer is better at avoiding kids running into the street then I am.

I love driving, but I can’t remember the last time I had a drive for fun, apart from the track.

It will be a boost for club racing and circuits, making driving cars a hobby.

If you are not driving, it makes more sense to be facing rearward. In the (very rare hopefully) event of an accident you would then be forced deeper into the seat rather than thrown forward.

you mean the "retards who can't drive"? :D

12 years without any incident, not even a speeding or parking ticket :^)

to me it just feels like there's more and more really really bad and insecure drivers on the roads, people who hate driving but do it because it's convenient ... they should just take the friggin bus if you ask me

Do you think it'll create an alcoholism problem? I'm gonna be so drunk off my ass every time I go out if my car can drive me home.
There are social implications. Rise in domestic violence, etc...
