Importing and titling "gray market" cars in the US?

Post

Has anyone here gone through the trouble of importing, titling and insuring a European or Japanese car that isn't imported by the manufacturer? Recently? Was it a pain? Did you have to fit anything special to it (lamps, cat, ecu, etc.)?

I've been looking all over the web, but I still can't figure out if there's any amount of money that could get a Clio Gordini RS or a C4 to Kentucky. I find it especially odd considering we don't have an emissions or safety inspection. Sure, you can go to the dealership and buy a German coupe, a British saloon, an Italian supercar or a Japanese Playstation-on-wheels, but no French hot hatches?

lol, ok, well that takes care of physically getting it here. Any thoughts on titling or insuring it, though?
