I don't think McLaren got the height on the nose cone wrong as some of you have claimed. I think Ferrari and Red Bull have exploited the step nose dimensions differently. The Ferrari has used the additional height of the front bulkhead for the pull rod suspensions where as Red Bull's air vent in the front bulkhead is there for aero gain, presumably.

I don't think the McLaren is at a disadvantage at all. The ground clearance underneath the McLaren's nose and the tub is similar to other 2012 cars we've seen so far.

I think what is most evident on the McLaren is how the front wing and the snow plough work together to direct air to the coke bottle waistline and to the back of the car.

Either way its a decent shot of the starter hole.
it looks like an outlet ... maybe the inlet is in the nose cone and air just flows inside the car to the rear and blows on diffuser?

According to this article they are feeding the air from the inlet forward through the nose structure and down to the front wing: http://www.racecar-engineering.com/news ... he-f-duct/

I don't see how so many turns would make stalling the front wing a possibility with such an inlet. It would have to turn 180 degrees and then 90 degrees at the wing pylons, and 90 degrees again to exit.

Either way its a decent shot of the starter hole.
In the bottom right corner of the picture I see a slot similar to that of ferrari f150 behind the crash structure.
Maybe someone else has already spotted it and called it a chimney (which I do not think it is, but I may be wrong) Was it there already on the rb7?

If not, it seems interesting: semidetached crash tube on the rb7 while ferrari seems to have dropped this feature and it had last year

Could the hole in the nose be piped all the way to the rear of the car ? Say the diffuser? Legally?

Shelly - we've had that discussion a while back on the MP4-27 speculation thread. I realize it's not a chimney, probably, but I'm just calling it that for convenience's sake.

Okay my vision of the car; I havent seen it for 100% but this car gives me the suggestion that it's exhaust doesnt blow anything, just like pre-2010. This gives me the suggestion where their strength will be, where their closest contenders seem to be trying to blow things Red Bull goes the easy route, and probably the best route.

The path seems to run quite immediately into the beam wing so I'm not so sure it doesn't blow.

If it doesn't though; Mark Webber said in a Q&A that he wanted a drivable car. I wonder if that includes removing the inconsistencies of on/off-throttle downforce. Maybe the exhaust would ultimately provide better lap times; but an inconsistent car would probably be a lot harder to drive

a closed door is what it is:closed.trying to exploit this degree of freedom is a waste of time and recources.you can try to create funny noise with the exhaust now that´s about it really.
Red bull looks a bit lost in the woods judging from Mr.Neweys words he seems to have no real idea what to make of the current regs which just restrict him...maybe they have already switched their REAL effort towards the new regs ,working with Renault? this prospect makes things hard keeping focused on 2012s contender...and it shows.

I am not an aero specialist, but I think the above outlines flow path lines are not quite right. The first point where, direction changes to air flow will take place is the very tip of the nose cone. Pressure and velocity will change there, together with re-direction the air. Once the air leaves the tip of the nose cone it likely will not even get directed onto the 'hump' but above the same. So, teh hump will likely not have any and if then a neglectible small influence. Likely some eddy style (dead water) circulation might go on. Probably below the nose cone and on teh side is what counts.
