2012 Car Comparison Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

There is mistake on the sidepod height caclulation. No way MGP are that low since the top of the cockpit opening should be at least 550mm high.

Plus when calulating the length, you should refer to the center of the external circle of the wheel instead of the wheelnut. They are in the same plane than FW endplate on the contrary of the wheelnuts so it should be more accurate.

And I'm a still not sure about the 1000mm. I found the article saying that you cannot have bodywork 1000mm ahead FW center line (except the nose area), but it doesn't seem to be mandatory. Maybe I missed a word or all teams mount their FW the foremost possible? :|

Still great to have people with sufficent patience to do these comparaison though!

AMG sidepods look lower than they are in that photo because the camera is more above the car than in the other images.

angles are all virtually the same if your compare the RR tire to the helmet. Not exact but pretty darn close

I'm using the RW endplates for reference. If the sidepod top height was taken from the base of the sidpod (next to the driver) then it should help.

I was thinking of this pic - the McLaren follows a more "L" shape on the wing - the Red Bull's flap and plane seems more to be extensions of the same airfoil shape. With the McLaren wing I'd assume activating DRS would equate to stalling that main plane of drag. With the Red Bull; would it achieve the same stall? I mean; maybe with a less aggressive stall; Red Bull's DRS-on position "loses" less downforce and so they can afford to open it in more places

Toro Rosso is a true double floor, Force India getting there but still retaining some bodywork...perhaps as more of a compromise between CoG and airflow and packaging considerations. Still, loving the sidepods from these two teams.

I was kinda hoping I'd see some sort of crazy car this year with a Williams invisible gearbox, Toro Rosso double floor and Force India/Caterham/Mercedes blade roll hoop, but I guess it all doesn't work together like that...or packaging would be insane. I'm sure someone thought about it. :)

Can you resize the photos before posting them please? Not everyone has NASA PCs.
