Just watched some footage, it's good on turning as soon as the weight transfer completes to the opposite side under breaking, then the car just doesn't want to turn at all until speed decreases significantly. I think in this manner, the aerodynamics run small role, pretty much maxed up on the wings. Lewis probably running more front wing than Bottas as he can really cope with more oversteer. Bottom line, its mechanical, the car just does not love slow speed corners.

really clueless onto why merc being supposedly the 3rd best car was surpreme today even in the dry parts of the race...was it all ham or did merc just provide the ultimate sandbag of the season?

Dan had a gearbox issue which is why he couldn't challenge Lewis, there was no sandbagging.

Well that is what Horner said and I didn't buy it for a minute.
Dan was questioned and he said that sometimes he had to manage the gearbox, but ultimately the result would be the same.And he also said that he would set up the car differently. I reckon that the issues started in FP3 where both RB were stripped down; evidence that after Friday everything went wrong.

I know this is speculative, but perhaps Merc gambled to setting up the car in Friday for wet race since they knew they would not have a realistic chance of beating Ferrari & Red Bull. Or, it could be that W08 this year is the best Rain Dancer and we all know it loves low temperatures.

He probably tried it off the line on the warm up lap and preferred it.
Kimi on the other hand had masterful car knowledge with regards to rpm vs clutch release vs traction/throttle application.

Wow. That is quite interesting! I can only assume that, the torque delivered on 1st gear was a little too much for those conditions and would have caused large amount of wheel spin. He did get wheel spin even at 2nd. So, he probably chose to start on 2nd, which in 1st, he probably had to moderate a lot more. OR was it just an error while starting the car?

Well I think it was on purpose. The Pirelli wet/intermediate tires aren't great for years. Drivers say it's like driving on ice in wet conditions. Knowing that the F1 cars anno 2017 are monsters and common sense telling that on normal icy, snowy roads, it is recommended to start in 2nd gear to reduce wheelspin and have more traction. I think that's the whole idea behind it. Clever thinking by Lewis.

This year cars are monsters in laptime but everything in them makes them easier to start without wheelspin. They have comparable power as last year (no rule change in there) yet are slightly heavier, more downforce (a bit irrelevant for the start) but more importantly much larger rear tyres for better grip under start.
