Mercedes W09 Speculation Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

That is quite true last years. 2016 was previewed as a strong Ferrari year and they sucked at the beginning. While 2017 was viewed as a disaster for Ferrari (predictions put them at best in 3rd, sometimes even in 4th after James Alison mid year departure during the regulations overhaul) and they did were very strong at the beginning.
I think lots of people were looking at what Ferrari was doing with Haas, the unlimited CFD time/loaned engineers, and assuming that aero development was going to be applied to the 2016 Ferrari.

In fact, Ferrari may have developing the aero concepts used in 2017, since it's obviously much more valuable to start strong in a new set of regulations rather than trying to make any significant changes to a car that had already been finalized in 2015 and for a set of regulations about to end.

Except that the rules for 2017 hadn't been finalized at that time.

I'm talking about Ferrari's so called "mid-wing" and the whole sidepod/floor arrangement, although even back in 2015 there was a fairly clear idea about how the 2017 regulations would turn out.

Think about it. Ferrari was using the Haas CFD time in mid-late 2015, at which point the SF-16H would have been all but finalized, they were not in a position to make substantial changes to the car. Much better to use that unlimited CFD time to try out new and genuinely radical ideas for 2017, a step which put them into real competition with Mercedes for the title.

WATCH: How F1 cars are changing for 2017

By August 2015, the fundamental changes were all locked in. This was when common public got clarity on what is coming. But the teams (including Ferrari) that were working on new rules, probably had this information well before we (in here it is Sky) got to know of them. So, the rules for 2017, were more or less clear in mid 2015 itself. So it's not that hard to believe that, Ferrari probably used the loop hole of Haas coming to F1 with unlimited windtunnel time, for 2017 rule changes.

Twitter post suggesting oil burning. Looked like a new engine starting up to me.

Interestingly it looks like the rear wing pillar won't be on the top of the exhaust pipe. Twin pillars like the Ferrari SF70H perhaps?
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Let's hope it looks different from W08's nose as this was a huge downgrade since the spanish gp in terms of looks.
But of course, speed is everything.
Mercedes AMG + Hamilton => dreamteam!
If you can't beat'em, call Masi!

Might still be monopillar, with the top half removed. I'm more interested in why the exhaust pipe changes shape!

To me, the weld lines suggest that it may not only be a simple S-bend. I've never seen such an arrangement within the current formula.
