Renault Sport F1 R.S. 18

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Hy guys, it's OT but short.

What is 1 point of DF?
1 out of 100, so variable on every car?

Or is 1 point a clear definition?

I found nothing in search.
I seem to remember someone (Paddy Lowe possibly) saying for them it mean 0.01Cl.
And I think this cars with this new regulations are around 4.5 - 5 Cl it's less than 0.25% so I don't think it's much. Maybe under 0.01 sec?
1 point is 0,01 W ( Cl is the downforce and it is a ratio of the weight of the plane/car ) so 1 point is 7kg more load on the tyres

At which speed?

these are plane equations
so it s not the speed that is set but the weight
then all parameters are calculated in cruise configuration so given that lift equates weight, and so you obtain a proper Cl and Cd
and any change in Cl and Cd influences the speed ( not the opposite )

of course for car is different, cause you dont have to optimize fuel but optimize speed ( performance )
that s why the whole Cl and Cd paramaters have to ensure best track performance ( so even more drag and even less efficency can be better if you obtain much more load at lowest speed )

basically you maximize load at slow and medium speeds and efficiency at fast speeds
they probably have different cars configuration to optimize that interact with each other or choose a reference speed to optimze the whole ( i dont know cause i never worked for a sport team )

I see, makes more sense for aerospace.
For cars, a definition downforce points based on weight sounds meaningless to me. But then the Cl is not very useful either, unless a reference area is provided.

If I had to bet I would say it's a centesimal part of Cl*A, so it can be directly translated to downforce given the speed and the air properties. But I have no idea honestly.

see how much commentators focus on efficiency ( like f1 is a plane ) and cl and cd i bet those paramaters arent even computed in 3d simulations for cars ( they dont make sense for planes too, they are merely used to compute basic plane behaviour in ideal flight maneuvers )

so it s a media thing

but surely if you try to improve some 2d coefficient it can have some benefit as a general parameter in a special configuration

If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari.
