Mercedes AMG F1 W09 EQ Power+

What about drag though. In some aeroplane books they say stall increase drag as well. why doesn't that apply to F1 rear wings? We always hear of stalling to reduce drag in F1.
Because pressure difference on an F1 car is significantly larger than on an aeroplane wings due to much more aggressive airfoils, cambers, angles of attack etc. So, with stall, you decrease pressure difference on wing surfaces on an F1 car (and very likely most single seater prototypes), but it increases on an aeroplane. This drag increase with stall is even more pronounced on gliders, as their wing drag (compared to wing surface) is ridiculously low. :)
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

I see thanks. I have been pondering.... Suppose in F1 a "stall" is a loose word for "way less lift" instead of boudary layer separation stall... Is there evidence of boundary layer sepration and "unpredictable behaviour" in deliberately "stalled" rear wings?

As predicted, there they go improving the front end...after they've improved the rear

Some of you Mercedes fans need to spend some time in old RedBull car topics to comprehend how the high rake concept works.

I'll give you a tip tho, without sealing the sides of the floor, it doesn't! The whole point is to gain a larger diffuser volume than the rules technically allow, which increases down force.
So apparently it's a crime (penalty being a down-vote) to point Mercedes fans (note I never used the derogatory "fan-boi's" term) to topics about a competing car which contain multiple years worth of analysis as to how the high rake is achieved and it's benefits! #-o

The rake is about traction, not generating more downforce. The rake allows for a softer rear suspension, which will improve traction. Something that is really useful with these V6s.

People like to differentiate those three tracks based on downforce, but in reality, they differentiate largely on traction. And that is the thing that Mercedes have struggled with, and that is also why they perform so badly on these tracks.

If it actually was aero that was the differentiating factor, Mercedes would have sucked pretty badly in Barcelona, which they did not.
Sorry, you're wrong, it decidedly has an aero impact as well
It's aero, however, isn't the goal.
It is and has always been driven by aero. Ever since the first redbull that had pronounced rake. If you look back far enough on this forum. I think ive done some CFD experiments with varying rake, there is increased downforce from the floor.
For Sure!!

That brings back memories ... iirc, the evidence was pretty conclusive. 8)

Those top devices are intended to help the outwash and thus better control of the tyre wake. That has more of an effect at the rear of the car, not the front.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Slightly conspiracy like here but...if you've just done a load of research on with the FIA showing outwash hinders overtaking. And you have the fastest car in qualifying but maybe not any more in the race...if you find a way to add a little more outwash without hurting anything else up front....

This would make it possible for them to do the same wastegate thing as Ferrari has tested recently.
