Mercedes-AMG F1 W10 EQ Power+

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter does not belong here.

That bottom element looks like it would make lift!

It probably would in isolation. As part of a wing, it's just camber, baby! 8)

First 5s viewed at 0.25x speed shows various parts deflecting. Also, LR tire absorbs a big impact with the yellow kerb.

Great shots, thanks for sharing.

What's always focusses the mind is the contrast between photo and reality. One views photos and talks about how much space there is between items A and B, but when one stands next to one of these cars , the reality is that the distances, spaces, sizes and voids are all really quite small. We compare part A at race X and race Y and say "it's much bigger at race Y than race X" but the real part is maybe a few millimetres bigger. See an F1 car up close and you realise how compact they really are. See a car from the 80s/90s and it looks positively minute.

It's so true. Except for the whole 5m wheelbase and super wide tyres part. They do take up a lot of space, but all these little winglets are actually quite tiny

dynamic balance
static imbalance

Surface has to be the same? Not surface area involved? And that influences the rate of heat transfer, right?

Interesting vid although not a lot in it that most of us don't already know. It's unfortunate that Ted doesn't ask the right question about the rear suspension steering the car, he seems to think it's to do with some sort of braking effect whereas the juicy rumours have been about passive rear steering.

Don't know Polish, but the linked video
https://twitter.com/f1talks/status/1142872495856476160
shows quite nicely how the Mercedes side-of-the-cockpit cooling is easily changed (from less to more cooling, at least) during a pitstop. May not be a huge thing, but since Toto mentioned again today on RTL.DE after the race (question was: can you please give us some hope, lol) that Austria being much hotter again, would mean their cooling might be an issue there, so tuning it when the race is hotter or cooler than expected seems quite advantageous.
