Mercedes-AMG F1 W10 EQ Power+

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter does not belong here.

Do we know if this update was planned for this year's car or did they bring it forward from next year's car like Ferrari might have done?
I don't believe any team, specially the top 3, would be willing to show everyone what they have for next year's car! After all both WCC and WDC are gone so no need for anyone to show 2020 designs that can easily get copied by the start of 2020...maybe only Williams does this because of the situation they are right now!

After all developments on a car take months to materialize...so these updates may have been designed back in August for example!

Unless it’s something super fancy which could be copied by others, you’ll want to put upgrades on the car since there won’t be rule changes for next season. No simulation beats track experience in order to keep developing the best way.

Edit: Remember, with pre-season testing reduced to just 3 days per week next year, it might even be the better idea to start testing parts for 2020 already.

Thought this was pretty visually mesmerizing. Through the Degner.

Wasn't the Mercedes known for the especially hard suspension? That is both a lot of squat under power and a lot of body roll.

Is this related to the new suspension Mercedes seems to be working with/on?

Or just a really rare moment the photographers do not manage to catch often, but still...

It definitely seems more compliant now than it used to be. Merc knows they have to have a more compliant suspension for 2021, so I fully expect them to continue working on it.

are you thinking of Lewis-era McLaren with the hard suspension? Mercedes I'd say are known more for FRICS that i think was Aldo Costa's specialist subject, and then the hydraulic bits that got banned at the start of last year. There's a similar pic somewhere of Rosberg doing the same thing a couple of years ago. That suspension is firm in some ways and soft in others

But now yes i reckon this is the new suspension dropping right down at the back under load, scraping the whole length of the plank. So it's one thing on corner entry and another thing on the exit and at speed. There was a pic of Valtteri scraping the back of the plank through 130R, on Friday I think
edit here is the Rosberg one, also Degner, 2016:

Fric was first developed at lotus before Renault bought them and some of their engineers went Mercedes including their aero chief .Aldo is not a specialist in in that domain and Mercedes were not ahead of anyone with that tech Rbr also has a great system

Aldo's basic expertise is with Suspensions and he started his first stint in F1 with Minardi as a suspension specialist. Paddy Lowe was another suspension specialist, with him being the chief architect of the Active Suspension of Williams in early 90s that dominated the F1. No wonder that Mercedes mastered FRIC once these two joined forces at Mercedes in 2012/13, before which Bob Bell and Mike Elliott from Renault had brought that knowledge to Mercedes but couldn't get it working to desired effect.

Thank you for finding the matching photo from a few years ago. What a great comparison. =D>

Is it the same turn?
In such a case the behaviour seems very similar.

it does look like Degner1 doesn't it. and so similar as you say. The cars are so close. What must it feel like in the car, all that pressure and balance?? The Mercedes looks more exciting tho

They're pulling several g laterally and accelerating out of the corner. That outside rear tyre is carrying a lot of load/stress. The suspension is basically fully compressed on that corner. The front right tyre is almost off the tarmac.

The photo is F1's laptime ability in a nut shell.
Turbo says "Dumpster sounds so much more classy. It's the diamond of the cesspools." oh, and "The Dutch fans are drunk. Maybe"
