Scuderia Ferrari SF90

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

There is nothing unusual about the heights. The studio photo will be without fuel and driver, so generally will sit higher. The track photo has these and also the back is being pushed down, as planned, by the rear wing.

Look how smooth and complacent the ride is. My God they've build a monster.

Still the car is planted and literally driving on rails. He didn’t even need to make small corrections on the steering. That lap looked like a sunday drive... astonishing :O

Well, he's also not even close to pushing the limits with the car. Which is why it looks so relaxed.

Yep, but this is the lap in which he did 1:16:221, not quite a "relaxed" laptime, considering that the 2018 pole was done in 1:16:173.

Other notable things in this lap:
- look how late he brake into turn 1, amazing.
- turn 3 and 9 completely flat-out.

I agree the car is perfectly and it seems like Vettel is only going 9/10ths at most. The engine is also not turned all the way up, probably there is also at least 10-15kg of fuel on board.

Also completely OT the new DT album is very good. Easily the best one in the Mangini era.

You need to bear in mind that all the team experts reckoned that cars would be 1.5 secs slower than last year. So, the times being done, when not even in quali mode, are showing a remarkable improvement in cornering speeds.

Binotto only admitted that their first windtunnel try was 1.5s slower than last years car. Of course all of the team experts played down their downforce and efficiency gains...

Still i wasn‘t expecting laptimes of 16.2s in testing...

I think we're all forgetting that the Barcelona circuit was resurfaced. The surface has matured and rubbered in quite a bit since then. That alone can have huge impacts on lap times.

I would say rather than seeing the 1.16.2 on C5 .. vettel did a 1.16.7 on C3s. That lap onboard would be more accurate to see how much of a push it was.. because based on the Pirelli delta C3s to C5s is a 1.5 sec gain. that puts the C3 laptime corrected to C5 at 1.15.2.. or close to 1:15 dead.. Now thats what a monsterous lap looks like...

P.s. I know its just testing but boy o boy the car is a monster..

Thanks for posting that zioture. It highlights what I said, in that the forward undercut area is similar to the Mercedes in terms of its forward/aft placement. The outer portion of the side pod duct however, is seen by the airflow as an open route.

Need to also bear in mind that Pirelli said that the evolution of the track resurfacing at Barcalona now meant it expected times to be roughly 1.5 seconds faster. So if they are running roughly the same times then perhaps the cars are 1.5 seconds slower compared to last year [https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/14162 ... ck-surface]

Someone have mentioned that Ferrari's front is ducking visibly too much under the breaks and on corner entry. Could this be to mitigate the lack of front-end downforce? Probably this is the reason why they don't have understeering issues like Mercs.
