The teams are trying to pull "clean" air down towards the front of the floor etc. and these devices are a good way of doing it. It's a fairly obvious device once you've got the big vortices in place from the vertical boards.

Red Bull should really thank Honda, not only are they getting a good power unit, they also had the winning design for the side pod end fences all along.

Mercedes isn't even close.

Granted this doesn't take the rest of the car into consideration but this area is very important. I feel that Toro Rosso was used as a Guinea pig as it sprouted a very rudimentary version sometime around Singapore.

Of course the first team to introduce this concept this year was Haas.

But they haven't gotten it to work any better than when the season started despite constantly modifying this area.

Haas VF-18 was the first to use those.

Not sure what to make of the Red Bull this year. They seem to have bolted on a massive upgrade package, which is impressive. Detail and refinement is probably the best Red Bull has ever produced. The car seems rapid in high and medium speed corners. Strong enough on the straights thanks to Hondas progress, and good on braking as usual. Just as last years RB15 it's still questionable how stable the RB16 is in mixed conditions. So far it seems prone to sidewinds, and you've got to wonder if that's ever solvable with the high rake philosophy. Probably just a (acceptable?) draw-back they've got to life with.

Not yet convinced this will be enough but we'll see.
So far I think it's more likely we'll see a RB driver spin in a race than a Merc retire with PU issues. Both will probably occur at some point. Comparing to last season though, Verstappen surely has a much better car to start the season with, so thats one very positive way to look at it.

it looks like RB16 has only 1 vertical element on the nose, while RB15 has many of it .... I thought it isnt allowed....we also see the green color behind the hole (or inside?), what is it?

According to the regulations, from a front view you mustn't be able to see anything behind the nose itself, that's why they used some vertical elements inside the hole.
Probably they discovered that less elements work better (aerodinamically) and they switched to the actual solution.
I don't think it's illegal (they wouldn't have brought this solution if it had been illegal) and the green colour, in my opinion, is just flow vis to visualize vortices exiting the nose.
Of course Alfa Romeo use the same solution to create that hole in the nose bulge.

The vanes are inside the nose to get around the rule following rule:

Only a single section, which must be open, may be contained within any longitudinal vertical
cross section taken parallel to the car centre plane forward of a point 150mm ahead of the
front wheel centre line, less than 250mm from the car centre plane and more than 125mm
above the reference plane.

Normally if the nose has a hole in the front, then it will form 2 longitudinal cross sections. By having the vanes (notice they are all angled or curved), then there is only the one cross section that the rules specify. I suspect Red Bull has just moved the vanes deeper in the nose compared to last year.

Has anyone discussed the changes to the suspension rockers? RB16 top and RB15 bottom. The new rockers seem HUGE compared to previous designs. Any thoughts on what drove the changes? Are they just exposed more due to bulkhead geometry now?

These new rockers also seem to be designed using an optimization program as the new geometry is not something someone would come up with. The front uprights on all of the cars seemed to go through a similar evolution 7 or 8 years ago, where they went from pretty rational forms (Conical, cylindrical, etc.) to the very organic forms we have now. Seemed to happen overnight and across all of the teams. I wonder what changed?

And, just for a laugh, the red damper appears to have a remote reservoir, that has a remote reservoir, that has a remote reservoir... Cracked me up for some reason. Sorry.

Nice picture indeed. Going more and more towards topological design yes. Evolution of CAD/CAE software and machining possibility's , good stuff. The possibility's have been there for a while, but the interplay with real world physics and experience is a very important factor in designing parts. Cool to see the clear evolution here.

Bypass canisters for position sensitive damping, the heave element is also acceleration sensitive not just velocity.

I reckon the rockers are flipped backwards for 2020 to make space for the steering bits?
