Red Bull RB16

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Engine sound different this year. Much more dull (bit like Renault), but also very high pitched turbo noises.

Could it be a matter of microphones??

Maybe, but the Merc is not that different to last year.

It still have that noise. When I was on the test on February, it was clear when a Honda PU was near. Also with that bangs that still are today

Its the microphones, as per tradition, the onboard sound quality has gotten even worse this year. Ferrari's onboard was just screeching distortion, Verstappen's f1tv stream was a bassboosted exhaust, in general its sh*t

Don't get me wrong guys, because I would like to hear screaming engines back but;

When you have a hybrid engine limited in efficiency, I would like it to make no noise at all. No heat loss either if that would be possible. Making a lot of noise is not a good sign since 2014. Transferring part of the heat and even noise back into energy using an electrically coupled turbo compound engine is the whole reason they got so quiet relative to the na engines.

Think about it. If the honda would make no noise at all, and no heat loss either, It would be 2000 hp and no radiator needed. That would be a slim bodywork. They would need to ad a horn to make themselves heared when lapping every 3 laps.

I know this all is a bit of BS, but please stop thinking you can hear horse powers somehow.
But just suppose it weren't hypothetical.

I don't think it is possible to fit an engine in that tight of an engine cover.

Good catch. They tested both versions today. This is the new one with the mounting pylons beneath the nose and the "duct" layout is different.

That's like 105mm rear ride height and ~35 at the front.

You guys are losing it. The Honda still sounds unreal, if anything more intense this year. Not sure what onboards you're seeing!

I'll see if I can get a grab from a Hotlap and post.
