Renault F1 R.S. 20

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Is it true there were no engine updates planned ‘this year’ but tgere is an update planned next year?

I heard rumors if a radiator style change, but does that means tokens will be used up?

You'll note that whilst there's changes to the main bargeboard elements there's also changes beneath the boomerang in the footplate too, as there's extra slots added to it for legality.

Alonso seat fitting inside an RS.20 (or 21?) mockup. It seems to be completely 3d printed :!: but the big parts were probably milles by a 5-axis machine

Interestingly enough actually they didnt run it last weekend, but this weekend they have decided to bring it out. Whats the use of it? does it generate more downforce, which last weekend actually for renault was not required?

No, changes in the sidepod area (including radiators) are free.

Sam Collins talks about that mock up here and he notices some interesting details on the car, like the sensors (05:33) the team placed inside the two roll hoop intakes... this suggests the the team might be planning some changes in that area... for 2021

They did the same in the 2017 post season Abu Dhabi tests where they placed a big amount of aero sensors (and even wool tuft on Hulkenberg's helmet) to study the air flow behind his helmet...

And a few months later the 2018 car was born with this

So my theory about the Renault CCS and the possible future changes isnt completely foolish after all :P

The (updated?) regs say "All water-oil or water-water coolers" (are frozen) but what do they mean with "water-water"? and this means that intercoolers arent frozen indeed. But what about the normal water rads and oil rads?

''Water -to-water cooling is normally used offshore (boat installation). In F1 water -to -air, oil to-air and oil -to- water cooling systems are used.

That's the standard FIA model.

Agreed. But being pedantic it's the FOM model. The FIA wrote the rules in conjunction with the research FOM did.

Great view on the moncoque's rear end (RS.19 IMO but RS.20 should be nearly identical)

And like the RS.18, its seems that the intercooler-to-engine pipe is integrated to the monocoque, unlike the other cars.
So the intake manifold is plugged directly to the tub (manifold red pipe to tub blue pipe) and the intercooler somehow connects to the other end of this charge air duct via another tub plug.
