McLaren MCL35М Speculation Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

That's the 2020 car engine cover, look at the picture of the MCL35 and turn this picture around you'll see if fits perfectly, the shape as well as the colours

Craig Scarborough mentioned it on his Twitter, definitely bulkier at the top compared to the 2020 car.

Yeah, now it's a mix between the Merc style airbox and the 2020 Mcl airbox.
It seems they modifed the vertical crash structure.

Not got the rule book to hand but can they alter the roll hoop? Using their tokens to modify the back of the safety cell to accommodate the merc pu.

More likely they modified the carbon around it.

The simple answer is No, all crash structures are homologated, but McLaren aren’t restricted by the token system. They can make any amendments necessary to fit the new PU as long as the FIA agree they are necessary, and not done for a performance benefit

These changes will be extensive given the different architecture of the 2 PUs, you simply can’t replace 1 with another without changing everything connected to it, or positioned around it

None of that means there will be any advantage gained or lost, simply it is different from before

It's a bit of a mockery of the standard engine mounting points when you have to make changes for oil tanks and such
