Mercedes W12

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Did anyone ever find out where the tokens were spent on the W12?
If indications from my pre-season sources are correct, Mercedes tokens have been commited but will not be used until mid-season. Mercedes plan to delay devlopments and only design from data collected at the track by midseason. In this way they have a better understanding and better gauge of their competition to make lofty targets. Sensible strategy if you start with a very strong car. If it were boxing it would be like analysing your opponent and reserving your energy for a knock-out blow in round 8.

Could be totally wrong though. We will see.

Wait, they can delay the application of the tokens for later in the year?!? I thought that got locked at the start of the season?

Same! Although maybe ‘spending’ it is merely stating what it will be used for to the FIA?

This looks like a precaution for hitting the barrières. Making the strut more beefy and in a straight line. Not so much aero. Which seems like a very good idea for Monaco.

After I asked about it earlier in the thread, I did some googling and found this.

Post edited, because from the date of the article I assumed that it would apply to 2021, but I forgot the 2020 season started late because of the pandemic. Sorry for any confusion I caused by quoting sections relevant to last year.

Sorry I'm not sure how useful that article is, I read it late last night and after reading it again, it seems to be talking about last year?

This is the part of the article about 2021.
These new homologated components will be designated R1-2021 components, in that their specification is frozen at opening practice for the first round of the season.

They will not allowed to be updated all year.

My understanding was that any token spend had to be on the car for Bahrain quali.

I had an intepretation like this..

https://the-race.com/formula-1/six-key- ... -answered/
For the coming season, components are split into two groups based on when the homologation needs to be frozen.

Some will have to be set by the first round (R1-2020 parts), others by round eight (R8-2020 parts).

Once the homologation is frozen, those components can only be updated between that date and the end of the 2021 season by using two tokens.
Your "R1 2021" should be R1 2020 for parts like the chassis. There are no R1 2021 rules That i have heard of.

Can we steer the Discussion towards the W12 again? If you want i can move the Token Discussion to the Team Thread or we can open a new Thread for it. I know it's kind of sort of about the W12 but not really. :wtf:

Simple, at this Point we don't know when or on which Parts the will be used. So its pure speculation and more a Team Tactics Discussion. If the Parts in Question arrive at the Car you can Discuss at it all you want. At the Moment there is nothing to Discuss that yould fit the Description of the Car Thread (the very first Post of this Thread).

Agreed, it is absolutely about the car because tokens don't go anywhere else. Otherwise we need to go back to the W12 Speculation thread if you actually want to be accurate.
