Ok- so the real question basically is, what do the proffesional forum posters from F1technical think of the out come of this race?

What went ‘wrong’ and what could you’ve done better?
Mercedes screwed up tire warm up in q3, and they screwed up strategy-wise during the race. In my opinion Mercedes was faster race pace-wise, but not nearly enough to get past on this circuit.
Maybe Mercedes already knew an undercut would not work for them. Because of their slow tyre warmup. Hamilton struggled in the 1st lap and after the restarts.

Before Charles boxed, Lewis said: “Let’s undercut him”

Afterall this would have been the right strategy. Was he genuine, or just luring Charles into an early stop?
I'm not sure this would have been the better strategy. Hamilton would have cleared them both if he stopped the lap after.

The strategy they had would have worked out perfectly, if it wasn't for the three safety cars. In the past x amount of races their tactic has solely been to have a battle at the end with having much better tires.

Frankly enough this race shows that they were practically just competing for fun for the rest of the season, no one in their right mind would have opted for this strategy knowing a safety car in Singapore is a certainty.

True that.

On another note, sometimes F1 can be weird, can't it? Mercedes with the best downforce package has had no problems heating up the tyres in the season so far and Ferrari with their low-drag philosophy was the counterexample among the top teams. Come Singapore, Mercedes needed much faster outlaps to warm the tyres up whereas Ferrari had no difficulties at all. I still don't have an explanation. Who does have one?

You mean they just threw a bone at Ferrari, just because they liked them

A couple of bad races with few if any points scored opens it up.
Umm, not quite. There are 150 points on offer (excluding fl), and Ham is nearly 100 ahead of Lec. He could still do it with a midfield car and a couple of dnfs.

I think Mercedes did not believe Ferrari could complete on just the one tyre stop so were staggering Lewis for his as long as possible.
Dont know if it makes any difference, but in all tests sessions the sun has been hot on the tarmac, so maybe their calculations were not right for night work, or maybe if the string of safety cars had not come out it may have worked out that way. Or, had there been a safety in the 7 laps before Lewis did stop, they would look really clever.

Ferrari is now strong on every track.
I have a feeling you will be severely disappointed in Susuka!
Sadly, I have the same feeling.

The thing is, it does not matter. Hamilton is already the 2019 champion. So, I am pretty sure, Merc focus is 100% on 2020.

? 7 races to go 100 points difference mate. ok, 96 point. Lewis need to DNF 4 times.

But 62 points to Bottas. Or are you assuming that he presents no threat? Would you assume that if Hamilton had a couple of DNFs/low point scores with Bottas winning?

Bottas present 0 threat.
Considering the team told him to slow down, it might even be a negative number.

The team asked him to slow down to ensure that Albon didn’t get a jump on Lewis... If Bottas would have run at a regular pace, not only would he have been ahead of Lewis, there was a chance of having Albon also undercut him.

During the first stint, some back markers were going faster than the race leader.
The driver in P2 complained on the radio that he couldn't go any slower.

I had no problem whatsoever with Monza Q3, but there's something wrong when driving slowly is considered a viable option in F1.

Instead of C3, C4, C5, why not bring C1, C2, C5 to a track like this? That would probably make a 2-stopper a better strategy, in which case tyre management is less of an issue.
