Instead of gimmicks like reverse grids, sprinklers, and whatever else dumb idea Crofty is shouting about
I'd pay serious money if someone "accidentally" muted his mic feed every race weekend!

Could you imagine the tension / story lines if the pit wall could see everything they see now but the driver couldn’t / it couldn’t be communicated to them?

The team principals would all be holding their heads in their hands the whole time.

Does anyone know how long it has been manditory to have a reverse gear ? When did the FIA add this rule ? 90's ?
In 1988 the F1 annex of the regulations said "All automobiles must have a reverse gear which must be in working order when the car starts the event and which can be operated by the driver when seated normally in the car."
The section wasn't present in 1972's F1 annex, but may have been in a general section I don't have.
According to here: https://www.f1technical.net/articles/24 Reverse was present in 1968, but I'm not sure if that is a rule or just a note about them being present (why would they be present if not mandated?)
for 1961 - self-starters and reverse gears became mandatory
(though of course the cleverclogs Brits later introduced bogus self-starters etc)

in Portugal 1958 Mike Hawthorn to push-start downhill went against the direction of the racing - so was disqualified
but his great rival Stirling Moss said Hawthorn broke no rule as push-start was on the pavement (sidewalk) not the track
so Hawthorn was then given the win - this allowing him to win the WDC (and denied Moss the WDC)

going on the track against the direction of the racing was once regarded as a great wrong
presumably reverse was intended to help the driver move the car from a bad place without going the wrong way

You have to give way within three marshal posts (who wave blue flags), not immediately. Although the front runners like it to be.
My point wasn't about when Russel should have made way, but that the onus to make way was on him.
although russell took the racing line, but he tried more than enough, to the extent that he ran on the white line and lifted a lot, went away from racing line to outside, to let lewis through.
look at the car ahead (bottas i guess) of lewis and russell in the 1st and 2nd picture. he was taking turn on wet patch, but unlike lewis, he wasn't carrying too much speed and made the turn clearly. it was just that, lewis carried slightly more speed in that situation, which he accepted.

Sucked in? You asked for it.
I think he was referring the fact that he knew certain people would respond!
And yet, you always seem to respond on other's behalf even if you're not addressed. You know , you who said "Unlike some, I don't live vicariously through the driver I follow or the car manufacturer he drives for." And then go on a posting binge defending everything Hamilton, saying you're a lot like him, have the qualities of him, just meaner.

One thing that doesn't lie is data, right?

Max was very consistent doing 1:17 high to 1:18 low in the last 18 laps with an average laptime of 1:18.013

He could only improve to a 1:17.524 and repeated the same laptime with 1:17.526 after a slower cooldown lap of 1:18.261

That was the best he could do and it's clear that he went for the fastest lap twice.

Lewis' fastest lap of the race was a 1:16.702 which was 0.822s faster.
Hamilton had DRS and massive tow worth at least 0.6 on his fastest lap.
Max also caught traffic in the worst of places, and once he got passed, the lapped cars generally knew the chasing pack would follow suit. It always seems that Giovinazzi is in the way!

I respond or don't respond to what I feel like, that's how forums work!

It is. But sometimes it is also a bit of a courtesy to let others finish. But then again, we all sometimes jump in, me too, like now. A bit of a balance, like most everything in life.

That was done in a sense in 2016 ...

From: Hamilton
De-rates everywhere. I’m sure that’s not helping. Is there no solution for this?
To: Hamilton
We are working on it, Lewis.
From: Hamilton
You guys need to pick up the pace.
From: Hamilton
Can I not reset this thing?
To: Hamilton
OK Lewis so the problem appears to be with the current mode you’re in.
From: Hamilton
Ah, I don’t what you mean but I don’t know what’s wrong.
To: Hamilton
Copy that Lewis, hard to say what it is.
From: Hamilton
This is ridiculous guys, I don’t know, looking at my fricking dash every five seconds trying to find a switch that’s in the wrong position. I haven’t changed anything or done something wrong as far as I’m aware.
To: Hamilton
Yeah Lewis it’s nothing that you’re doing wrong, just got a setting that’s incorrect.
From: Hamilton
Is it HPB?
To: Hamilton
I’m afraid I can’t say, Lewis.
From: Hamilton
I may not finish this race because I’m going to try to change everything.
To: Hamilton
Don’t advise that, Lewis.
From: Hamilton
Can I make a suggestion and you say if it’s OK or not?
To: Hamilton
No that’s not allowed. Let’s just get our head down and focus on the job.
To: Hamilton OK Lewis you’re the fastest car on the track.
From: Hamilton
Thanks man. Got power back.

That was one of the stupid FIA rules (imo), were they decided to inject themselves into determining what was good for the show and what wasn't.

If memory serves some drivers got penalties for random stuff. Without checking I think Rosberg got one in Silverstone.

It was kinda funny from my perspective, but it didn't land and live that long ..
But I do agree, less is more.

I would like the power-to-weight ratio to be much higer; machines that, as Clarkson always stated, would love to kill the driver with a smile.

The problem with that train of thought is, a car can't be cheap to produce, highly safe, and highly performant at the same time.

As an aside was this pulled from the old ratio transcript racefans.net used to do? I really miss those.

Yeah, I know, but ... cheap wouldn't be a real issue, neither would performance be (1.500 hp / 500+ kg was done 35yrs ago).
Safety would prove decisive here I guess; when only the real braves would dare to touch 80%, it would take an absolute madman to hit 90%.
It probably would get messy ...
