2018 Austrian Grand Prix, Spielberg, 29 June - 1 July

For ease of use, there is one thread per grand prix where you can discuss everything during that specific GP weekend. You can find these threads here.

Can anyone please make a containmant thread for the endless tyre story where LM10 and his pals could go on about it instead of bringing it up in a race thread where the tyres aren't even being used?
It will keep being brought up though. Even Vettel himself has buried the idea and it hasn’t stopped.

Read my post directly above yours. I agree with you with regard to it needing to stop however until the point I’m making sinks in it won’t stop.

It was not me who mentioned the tyre topic here. :) It was Big Tea and I neither think he is a Ferrari fan (I guess that's what you meant with me and my pals), nor do I think that he has any problems with Mercedes. :)

I am not a Ferrari fan, and the question was not team specific. Although most fanboys did not even seem to read the question

( not including everyone as a fanboy btw)

That tidbit of information doesn't fit the narrative they want to write!
I don't ignore it. Ferrari struggling does not change the fact that Mercedes seems to be more comfortable on those tyres than on the usual ones.
You clearly are seeing as Vettel admitted that Ferrari ‘seemed to be more comfortable on those tyres than the usual ones’ to use your words.
Look here’s a link for you. http://www.espn.co.uk/f1/story/_/id/235 ... -due-tyres

I’ll even cut and paste to save you having to look for it.
"I think it's pretty straightforward," he said. "Obviously you don't get the chance to revisit this kind of decisions that are made [very often], but we did it today and the result is that if we had had the normal tyres on Sunday, it would have probably been worse, so it was the correct call. It was our fault for not having the same tyre wear or life as other people."

I hope this post will be allowed to stay. It may help stop this idiotic and clearly debunked subject being brought up in every race thread.
That quote doesn't debunk anything though. Ferrari "probably" have been worse with normal tires according to Vettel, but that doesn't prevent Mercedes from benefiting from modified tires more and hence relatively much better of with the special tires compared to competition.

So if you're theory is correct, after the British GP Pirelli will only bring "normal" tires and Mercedes will no longer benefit, Ferrari will win all remaining races and win the championship. In other words, Ferrari can only hope the Mercedes is quicker simply because of the tyres.

"Normal" tyres again and a known track. This is gonna be the first time we will be able to kind of compare the qualy performance on spec 2 of Ferrari and Mercedes and also spec 1 of Ferrari (if Kimi manages to finally do a clear Q3 run which I really hope).

Yea, well, I think that it's a good basis to have everything as usual/known (in this case tyres and track) to be able to compare two teams the best as possible.
I didn't mention Mercedes being suited by the others tyre, though.

The mystery of the thinner tyres is an easy one?

They are used on specific tracks because of those track characteristics. The tracks require high aero efficiency and power which plays perfectly into Mercedes hands.

You see what happens when the fastest driver gets the fastest car? Pointless arguments inundate the threads.
Pirelli scrapes a hair off the tyres and all of a sudden mercedes is faster by 3 seconds. Oh please.

To post some numbers 0.4mm are about 12.5% of the tread depth of the tire, so not just a thin hair

Hamilton and Bottas by far the fastest on the straight for now.

They are used because of a specific brand of tarmac not corner characteristics.

Anyway... Austria will be another one stopper and you won't even need to run the harder tire.

Off topic question: How much do cars lose time from mass and air resistance form HALO? Any approximation known? How much mass does HALO actually have?

Cars became 5 kgs heavier this season, i expect the halo is around that...
Air resistance, no clue.

Air resistance, no clue.
The Halo weights a lot more: "teams have found that the Halo and its mountings can weigh up to 15kg"
