It was on hards. Soft run now not fast enough, third sector slow. Max back in the pits.

The Mercedes looks very planted through the turns. I wonder if they will trim back the downforce a little so they can gain more straight line speed.

Ouch, that's really going to hurt later in the season!

Indeed it was on the hards. I've watched it from onboard cam.
I think in the end of the stint they did a practice pit stop with changing tyres.

Ferrari massively quick so far, so I predict another Bahrain type of performance from them. RB, on the softer compound, was with Vettel until s2, then on s3, almost half second slower. And people still believe Honda is close to Ferrari/Merc......

I'm pretty sure they are in different engine modes, because if I heard the commentators correctly, Merc was over 20 kph slower down the back strait. Ferrari "might" have an engine advantage, but it isn't worth that much.

What is the grid penalty for taking a 3rd? Must be a generally reliable component seeing only two permitted per year, so if a 3rd is needed, should only be a grid penalty at one race and they'd probably strategically pick a race where they can easily do damage limitation.

Yeah it's possible, in the onboard lap with Vettel his engineers tells him to run a 1+ test on the backstraight, so it's entirely possible the gain there is due to that. I don't think however the sky commentators ever said 20kph, they were talking about a difference of 8kph between Leclerc and Vettel, but even Hamilton's engineer didn't know Vettel's speed because there was no GPS (at least that's what Hamilton's engineer told him after his lap).

Still though, it's a medium tire lap against a soft tire lap.

Again its the same pattern as 2018, Ferrari took pole by over 5 tenths to Mercedes and i'm expecting nothing different here.

Last year Vettel had to take his second CE very early in the season as well and didn't need to take a third one.
