F1 2017 Design

Post

Hi all,

I would like to become an Aerodynamicist / Surfacer and in order to improve my skills in surface modelling I have been working on designing a Formula One based on 2017 regulations. Please enjoy and comment what you think about it. Thank you. :D

I'm impressed. Nice clean design.

Do you have a 3d file to run a CFD simulation?

Really impressive, and also the first model I've seen that has included what I think will be a representative sidepod width. I'm gradually getting used to the look of 2017 cars and beginning to like them.

Really really awesome looking thing - nice work.

Are the regulations for next not mandating a longer nose though? Or have I got that muddled up somewhere?

Dont know about aero perform (seems legit :)), great render and design. Top notch.

Minimum length is 200mm longer (ie nose tip at minimum 1050mm forward of FWCL instead of 850) - but the rest of the regulations about cross sections and so on remain the same

Wow, your design looks very cool and smooth - I'm starting to like this new cars a lot more as the time goes by, and hopefully we will see a huge amount of development trough the year

Thanks.

Forgive me for being dim (clearly that is what's happening here because everyone is doing 2017 nose designs that look much like 2016's to the naked eye): but you're saying the noses will be 20cm longer than last year - 2/3 of a foot - wouldn't that be more visually obvious?

Also, 1m+ forward of front wing centre line? How am I misreading that? That sounds like a lot!

I think he means front wheels.

As Sevach says, FWCL is referring to the Front Wheel Centre line, so the nose itself is longer, but the wing has also been moved forward by ~200mm*, so the effect isn't really visible unless you are comparing from the front wheel centre line which is more obvious. Annoyingly however, I can't find any renders on the internet that demonstrate this nicely - all of the side by side comparisons have lengthened the nose but not moved the leading edge of the front wing forward to match. And because the cross section requirements remain the same (and are based on distance from the nose tip) it's entirely possible to have another protruding thumb style solution to these crash regulations
