The Coca-Cola Company will return to Formula 1 in January 2013 through its global energy brand “burn” in a multi-year sponsorship of Lotus F1 Team. Details of the sponsorship will be revealed in 2013 when the partnership officially launches.
Emmanuel Seuge, Group Director, Worldwide Sports & Entertainment Marketing, The Coca-Cola Company:

“The creativity of teams and the passion for speed and energy that fuel the sport of Formula 1, make a partnership with this iconic sporting property a compelling proposition for the burn brand. Lotus F1 Team, as the number one emerging challenger in the sport, has demonstrated exceptional creativity in their approach to Formula 1 racing and their collaborations with partners - an approach that mirrors the philosophy of burn. We will bring that same creativity through burn, incorporating art and music in a way that will break the conventions of traditional Formula 1 sponsorship marketing.”

Burn is available in more than 80 countries throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Eric Boullier, Team Principal, Lotus F1 Team:

“We are proud that The Coca-Cola Company has chosen Lotus F1 Team as the best vehicle to represent the burn brand in its most high profile partnership. We are excited to partner with burn to build a new and innovative model for sponsorships that will combine experiences, content creation and social media; an area in which our team has been at the cutting edge in Formula 1 for the past 18 months, recording the highest growth rate amongst fans this year."

I always wonder how many drinks Red Bull must have to sell to make the hundreds of millions they spend on F1, high-altitude parachute jumps, and extreme sports, all worthwhile.

Well, I also always knew they must sell enough or they wouldn't do it; to see another "major" drinks company entering the sport must mean that they also feel this association is thoroughly worthwhile in terms of drinks sales.

If they pump money that can allow Lotus to develop the car in such way to jump one of the top 3 teams in the constructors I don't see the problem. Red Bull Racing is a hilarious name as well, but we got used to it.

I hope that they keep the black-gold (cream) livery next year.

Lotus marketing team have done a brilliant job in securing mega sponsorship, first with Unilever and now Coca Cola. With these mega deals Lotus will be well funded to fight for championship next season. good news for Lotus fans and Kimi.

Burn's website (it's pretty terrible) suggests black with Orange / Red fire might be likely...

The sponsorship went pretty well for them this season if you look at what they had on the car in pre-season testing and now - among the names that appeared on the car are AGT, InterWetten and Avanade. They attracted in Formula One another big name earlier this season - Microsoft - through Microsoft Dynamics. As far as I know the Microsoft partnership is more about exchanging experiences more than money - they provide business solutions and some cash, Lotus provides exposure.

I guess the plan is to see if Lotus can develop into a proper top 3 team with some more cash and if they can Coca-Cola will prob either pump in more via becoming main sponsor or buying the team.

the colour scheme fits perfectly, wonder if this was a factor involved with deciding on which team,

possible, but I reckon Kimi's image could be a big factor here. Despite his 2 years absence he is still one of the most marketable driver on the grid.

I guess Lotus hits the sweet-spot for some advertisers. Not as expensive as the elites (Ferrari/Mac) but front-running enough to be plenty visible.

They are making money on most of these activities.
