Post

I am a "Die Hard" McLaren fan but I also like Honda and are very, very sad to see Honda suffer like this.

Hope them all the best for the future !!! I am still in two minds if the Renault move was the correct one !!!

Hope Honda and McLaren can come back in 2021 and rule like 1988 !!!
all good mate.

True and false.

They did have issues with the 2017 MGU-K but just in testing. They never ran the 2017 MGU-K in races. They Ran the 2016 for the whole 2017 season. The 2017 MGU-K is running in testing for 2018, They are having issues with it.

My point was they can run the 2016 MGU-K in 2018 and not have any issues.
There is no proof of this capability of the 2016 mgu-k being able to work with the 2018 engine and it would then again leave Renault teams with a 5kg deficit if it was used. Renault should really be looking at something a little more reliable then that 2017 mgu-k unit but not as old as the 2016 unit.
And it is in the season which they allowed to use only 2 MGU-K for whole season?
You do realized we're just talking shiit here right ? These comments, from the suppliers, are made with broad strokes and we're sitting here debating semantics.

Yes the 2017 is 5KG lighter that the 2016 is that a really a big issue ? The 2016 might be 5KG lighter that the Merc 1 for all we know. We don't know much to be honest.

yes they might not be able to mate the 2016 MGU-K to the 2018 PU (highly unlikely. You have to presume the part of the ICE where the MGU-K connects to has changed from 2017)

They couldn't use 2017 mgu-k because of reliability under 5 per season regulation. How they can use it this year? They must just solve the problem.

Who cares, out with the old, we already know Honda has the lightest most compact MGU-K on the grid. I don't think they've ever had a MGU-K failure. This is no longer an issue for this team, getting the power unit integrated, Honda and Toro Rosso doing their jobs and working together is the biggest focus for this team.

Good talk about possible sizing of the MGU-K in the power unit thread, Craigy made a good point.

Jakarta - Stephanus Widjanarko is an alumnus of Institut Teknologi Bandung who works in F1 racing team, Toro Rosso. He served as an aerodynamicist, aero department, F1 racing team, Toro Rosso.

Typical term, Tephie, as he is commonly called, is responsible for Toro Rosso's car components relating to the aerodynamic system.

One of the key points of this system is to keep Toro Rosso's car rate steady both on the corner and on the straight track. For the race car of the 2018 season, Tephie is fully responsible for the nose (nose) and front wing design. "From the end to the front tire limit," Tephie told Tempo at SG Golf Caffee, Prapanca, South Jakarta, Monday, January 1, 2018.

According to Tephie, aerodynamicist at Toro Rosso is divided into three working groups. First deal with the front sector, as he handles. Then there is the responsible on the middle, from the rear of the front tire to the engine. Finally, responsible in the rear diffuser and rear wing.

Design the nose and front wing was completed and successfully undergo tests in wind tunnel. According to the plan, the new nose of Toro Rosso racing car will undergo the inaugural test at the circuit on 26 February in Barcelona, Spain.

According Tephie, this season is not too many changes made on the design of F1 racing car. Except for the application of Halo, the protector of the head of F1 racing car.

"A bit complicated when the implementation of Halo. The team must make some adjustments because the place is very narrow, especially in the air hole above the head of the racer, "he said.

The use of Halo, Tephie continued, could make the air flow to the engine room and the diffuser part is disturbed. And this can affect the performance of the car during the race. "Yes it could be the temperature of the back tire suddenly drop, or engine and brake overheat," he said.

Stephanus Widjanarko is a young man born in Bandung, May 24, 1986. He started his career in F1 Toro Rosso racing team since 2013. He served in Toro Rosso aero department with 100 others. Tephie is one of 25 aerodynamicists, and the only one from Asia.

Searched around and the interviews done at this event all seem to be behind a paywall on F1life.

Any new info in the Jan 2018 edition of F1 Sokuho magazine?

Re: 2018 Scuderia Toro Rosso F1 Team - Honda

Here's a quick summary:

Although fan reactions were overwhelmingly negative when the news was announced that McLaren Honda were to split and Honda was to instead supply STR for 2018 the reality is very positive, a genuine win win situation. In fact Honda may end up being extremely grateful to McLaren for splitting by the end of 2020.

Firstly McLaren is superficially a top team, the second most race wins in F1 and the second longest history. However its last race win was in 2012 and its last WCC was in 1999, last WDC in 2008. The facilities in Woking are excellent but it hasn't produced a top car for nearly 10 years. In that period it has had Hamilton, Button and Alonso, a top driver line-up. They haven't had a title sponsor in 5 years and have been largely dependent on funding from Honda for the last 3.

McLaren's attitude has not changed to match their decline. They made technical demands of Honda that could not possibly be fulfilled. One can see why Honda could not achieve the results it wanted to with this kind of relationship. Once Honda switched to STR they were shocked by the openness emanating from Red Bull, being given information McLaren would never have shared making it far easier to match the chassis and engine.

Although STR are superficially a small team they have top facilities in Faenza which have received considerable investment. They have access to a windtunnel in Bicester (?) and cooperate with Redbull technologies when required. Redbull technologies is developing the gearbox for the STR Honda so information regarding the PU will be flowing straight to RBR and Newey.

Red Bull did not take part in the PU exchange with McLaren for altruistic reasons. They even loaned Sainz to Renault to facilitate the deal. They would not have done this had they not benefited from it, and this isn't just because they would save on PU fees to Renault. Red Bull are aware Renault do not intend to supply them beyond 2018 and Honda is their only option. If so it would help if they had STR run Honda's one season early so that they have more information to get the most out of the first Red Bull Honda design for 2019.

STR's formal title for 2018 is Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda as opposed to Scuderia Toro Rosso which has been its formal title since Minardi was bought. Could this be in anticipation of a formal deal between RBR itself and Honda? In this scenario Honda would have 2 years or so to prove itself before the new regulations kick in in 2021 during which RBR could assess the new regulations and its partnership with Aston Martin and decide which to go with in subsequent years.

STR was thought to be up for sale but it appears that this was partly due to the talent pool in the Red Bull driver programme drying up. Now Red Bull have signed up more talented youngsters there is a renewed need for a nursery team such as STR to develop them. Although there were rumours Honda would buy STR this never became anything substantial due to board level opposition. There is still trauma left over from Honda's previous stint as a team owner up to 2008. There was also resistance to the idea of buying an Italian team, the centre of the F1 world is in the UK and the best Italian talent still wants to work for Ferrari.

We don't know how things will go with Honda but its clear things couldn't go further with McLaren and a partnership with RBR itself is possible. There is a determination to prove McLaren wrong at Honda.

(My opinion) There's a lot of speculation in this article and few facts. Very few new bits of information, we knew that McLaren and Red Bull have different ways of working with their PU suppliers and that RB is eyeing Honda up as a future partner. Good to hear that so far the partnership with STR and Red Bull itself is warm and open.

Totally agree with all that you're saying, just going to point out it was 1998 the last time they won the WCC, and they have had top cars in the last 10 years,

2010 they had a shot at the drivers title going in to the last race of the season, If they had a No1 & No2 driver, they probably would have won that title.

2012 they had THE BEST car of the season it was regularly the fastest car, but again, not having a No1 & No2 driver DID cost them a WDC Title.

So its not fair to say the have'nt produced a a top car for nearly 10 years.

It seems TR chassis had just passed FIA crash tests!
How is this possible given that they are late in development?
Or maybe they on schedule in the front (engine independent), and late at the rear?

You sure they had the best car in 2012. They had a great driver line up and finished behind both Res bull and Ferrari in the constructors championship and Kimi in his lotus finished above both drivers in the driver championship. Also only won the same amount of races as the red bull did. Not exactly best car
