... our engineers are flying to Sakura, to Japan when there is a special programme on the dyno or wherever because we are now much more involved also in the dyno runnings. We started already in November/December with the gearbox, and engine and gearbox tests and gearshifts and all this kind of stuff and we also are currently running a programme in Sakura.

I wonder if Mclaren did this, too? Remember the gear box issues they were having last year.

Honda's Kakuda revealed they didn't test the engine with the new McLaren gearbox as it wasn't available to them. I still can't believe that :wtf:

So Woking failed to supply Honda with a dyno chassis (Amazon documentary) or 2017 gearbox before pre-season testing (Motor Fan - Feb'18, translated interview is somewhere in the engine thread)

This was in the amazon documentary which is pretty amazing... McLaren was pressed against time to have the chassis ready for testing day and neither was provided to Honda prior to the engine arrive at woking according to it. In the film, they mated the engine and gear box for the first time at Woking. There was a big fuss that the engine didn't fire up and the gear box didn't mate up to the engine and they had to fabricate parts to make it work.

There was a scene for during or after the testing days where they showed a McLaren employee prepping a chassis to be sent to Japan for testing and he seem irate and annoyed that he had to do that and was seem upset about how the testing went.

This is documentary and it is hard to say if they didn't cut the full context out of the scenes and did not give us the full story but this was how it was presented in the film.

According to what Wazari pointed on the Honda topic. The updated PU was run on Canada with a conservative mapping (I think to be sure all work fine on the ICE). So, here in France we should see some improvements with the mapping and new aero parts that STR will bring... Maybe that GP will be the inflection point for Honda and STR to start doing good results regularly 8)

"The new update from Honda in Canada yielded three tenths per lap,
due to unforeseen circumstances that was not entirely usable in Canada."
Does anyone know what he means with these "unforeseen circumstances"?

Maybe the issues, or maybe the conservative mapping Honda talked about... Let's wait at this GP if there are any improvements

Not more than logical to run a conservative mapping, collect the data during the race and decide for more agression in the next race.

He might mean no more than Gasly starting from the back, and Hartley being Stroll-ed on the first lap, i.e. neither got a proper race, though its hard to tell for sure.

personaly honda should get crank it and see where the engine is at. nothing to worry now. redbull honda deal is done. use the remaining races to get the most out of the engine and prepare for 2019

On this article:
http://www.nextgen-auto.com/Renault-for ... 27946.html

Marko is quoted in full saying:

"The new (Honda) update, which could not be properly used in Canada due to unfortunate circumstances, brought three tenths of laptime," he said.

"So the deal with Honda is extremely positive for us in every way. Sport, technical and financial," added Marko.

So in that context it sounds like even with the improvement, it has potential to yield far more. The unfortunate circumstances could be new be the crash, but what about a new fuel not arriving? Or calibration on Gasly's second new unit not at expected levels, maybe to test MGU-H integration?

Either way, Red Bull are really positively backing Honda. Must of been pretty good info and access they've been given.

Exactly, takes to Honda between 2 or 3 races to verified and have a correlation of the data with the units running in their dynos, usually they click one notch up every race until they have it running at its full performance, that my estimation for this spec is Austria.

Albert Fabrega: "The problem in the Gasly engine changed in Canada is not fundamental. There have been modifications to avoid repetition and believe that it is controlled. The improvement in Canada was assessed around 0.3 "in rating near 0.4" / 0.5 "in race pace."
