Did Toro Rosso run the aero package after all?
No, they didn't, because Gasly couldn't test it enough during the rain on Friday.

It's going to be slightly better weather in Mexico. Let's see what the Honda can do without penalties.

But these qualifying times are from Q3 only for the STRs as they did not went out in Q2 anymore. I don't think that was their maximum.
Neither did Mclaren.

wow that mclaren is slow in a straight line with the sped both toro rosso caught it. no drs either
The car was actually faster on the straights than both Toro Rosso's that were the slowest on the start finish line. Vandoorne just had a really bad exit. Also they had slipstream.
Final proof to all the blind worshippers that Mclaren has a draggy car and it aint the engine that is and was the issue for the lowest top speed. Drag penalty is highest at higher speed and Macca were slowest car in terms of top speed. Toro rosso just does not have the traction out of corners hence the slowest speed at finish line but the top speed is decent.

Well, if you look at the data, Mclaren was loosing most of the speed in the corners, not on the straights. Which is because they ran a low DF setup due to drag issues etc.

Yes, for McLaren it WAS the maximum, but I think not for STR.

Gasly ran the new floor - just not the new wing.

Wake up man. So even after all that drag reduction the car had lowest top speed!!! Regardless, time through corners is the metric one need to look at; not speed Look at sector 2 data is all i say.
Anyway back to topic, TR is piss poor through the first sector in the twisty esses section, lost almost a second to top cars and at least few tenths to backmarkers. Even in FP3 they were losing half a second in S1 to Max and then gaining back in other sectors. Maybe explains the lack of overtake in race as they could not keep up in the twisty sections to launch in the straight. Team seem clueless on the direction.
Hartley better deliver in Mexico as he has driven on it multiple times anything less than Q3 quali and P8 in race will be curtains.

If you look at the team radio transcripts, Hartley was complaining his DRS was not activating.

I'm not so sure, the step up the order came with the introduction of the new engine - running the old one again this weekend shouldn't be a major disadvantage, but aero wise I can't really see where having the upper hand over Renault, Force India, Haas and so on should come from. And if the new wing comes with an improvement at all is yet to be seen as well

@Pierre Gasly lands more grid penalties .

Honda Racing F1: Tanabe-san talks us through the PU plan this weekend 🗣️
"Gasly is starting FP1 with a new latest spec PU. The reason for this is that we have a concern
regarding the assembly of the one used in Austin." He continues below...

Bad news.Reliability problems about Spec 3 continues.
Some issues found in the PU after Austin GP,Honda think it can not be used for race again.
So both drivers will run Spec 2 this weekend. The PU will be send to HRD Sakura for a further investigation.
For Gasly, they will take a new fresh Spec 3 and then switch to the Spec 2 on Friday,so there will be a penalty.
For Hartley, the Spec 3 that used in Japan GP is not that damaged and can be use again,so he dont need to stock a new one.He will run Spec 2 from Friday.

Not the worst news

In reality theyare only going to loose out to Williams and maybe sabuer on the grid and stand a better chance of finishing the race

For the first time i believe this year, Hartley is running in Top 10 in FP1. That is quite an achievement for him. Above P8 in quali must be the target

They also have new spec 3.something with new combustion chamber so I will take those "reliability" issues with a grain of salt, everybody knows they are testing for next year
