Correct, to an extent. However, the MP4-20 was the last truly Newey designed McLaren. Yes the subsequent cars up until MP4-23 were derivatives but they were developed without Newey under Fry, Goss and Lowe. Remember the first direct descendent from the MP4-20, the MP4-21, was winless.

Wrong. The MP4-24 remained a dog until the Germany upgrade package that consisted of more than just the double diffuser. The car already had a previous iteration of the double diffuser before Germany if I recall correctly. And suddenly, after Germany, it became the 2nd fastest car in most races behind the RB5 and the fastest in some. As for it only being good in Hamilton’s hands, Kovalainen was hardly any good in the championship-winning MP4-23 was he?

Wrong again. The MP4-26 wasn’t lacklustre at all. Overall, it was the second fastest car throughout the season with it being the fastest at many races. Heck it won 6 races when it should’ve won 8 or 9 (Spain, Monaco, Korea to name but a few). I agree that the MP4-25 and MP4-27 were quick cars and should’ve Hamilton the WDC but for a number of events that occurred. And Fry wasn’t responsible for any McLaren after the MP4-25 as he had left the team in May 2010.

That aside, I remember the 2009 and 2011 seasons very well and I stand by my assertion that the MP4-26 and 24 were junk cars. Second fastest to Red Bull in 2004 is like saying BAR Honda was second fastest in 2004 compared to Ferrari. Ie it doesn't mean much.

Well it means faster than Ferrari, Mercedes and every other team that wasn't 2nd fastest to Red Bull....

Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

And if you will recall, the MP4-24 chassis was utter garbage until the put a Double Diffuser in it. Even then it was only good in the hands of Hamilton.

I remember during Winter testing they came with version of the floor they thought would be very effective, but turned out to be disastrous.

Norris will do another FP1 session in Sochi. Team is definitely fully focused on 2019.

The team preview doesn't mention who he will be replacing in FP1. Since they are alternating, it could be Alonso this time.

AMuS reporting Alonso might stay as a test driver for 2019. Makes since given they don't have any for next season and it gives the option for him to stay in the loop and possibly make a comeback.

Would also be an incredibly useful resource to have during winter testing to give direct comparisons of the MCL33 & 34. Only slight issue would be that if Sainz or Norris go through a sticky patch next year then the fact that one of the best F1 drivers around is sitting in the simulator could become a bit uncomfortable.

Indeed. And in terms of general feedback as well which will probably translate to on-track testing more than sim.
They both have a two-year contract though.

I wonder of Alonso even saw the inside of the McLaren sim... When at Baku for the first time, the drivers in the pressco were asked if they trained in the sim, when Alonso was asked he as almost surprised they even asked him this question and his answer was a resolute No.

I remember that. Still out-qualified Button by 0.6 sec. The man has a hectic schedule anyway. Why add an extra unnecessary duty.
