Well, not so strange, they can't just paint an Andretti car orange anymore since the split with Honda. Do they still have close ties with Penske? As I recall, the only thing that's not really standard on an indy car is the suspension springs and dampers, the rest they can just source from Dalara and GM.
Are you 100% they will not use a Honda?
Now that it has been (more or less) established that they were getting a bad press in the Mclaren, the name in America is not so much attached to last years Mclaren F1 and I think Honda are savvy enough to look at the deal honestly and make a decision with out bias.
They haven't announced which engine they'll use, but journalists, including Andrew Benson claim they'll be powered by Chevy, and it's down to Honda refusing to supply Fernando, according to Benson.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Meanwhile Marshall Pruett says its Chevy because McLaren and Honda still have issues but Honda are fine with Alonso as they have also publicly stated.

Yes, I think it is a Honda issue with Mclaren, not Alonso.

I guess they have to run one of two, including the aero package.

Not sure why Honda would have an issue with McLaren ..they're far better off with the BULLs. More important that anything is they now supply 2 teams which they were having difficulty lining up with McLaren.

Honda really doesn’t like Toyota drivers... just like Alonso couldn’t race for Toyota while there was a Honda in the back of the Mclaren. If I remember correctly their contract was confirmed the day after the Honda breakup.

Its worked out well for them (you'd hope anyway) but its pretty obvious why they'd have a problem, they were publicly dumped from a 10yr contract and humiliated. They've bounced back admirably and are on the up but that would've gone down terribly.

Alonso's just a driver, he doesn't make those decisions and if McLaren wanted him to tone down his rhetoric they could've reined him in but they didn't so obviously Honda are going to be more peeved with the organ grinder. They've publicly stated they have no issue with Alonso, drivers always moan about their equipment when its not up to snuff, it goes with the territory like Max is demonstrating right now with Renault.

They don't have the supplier specific aero packages anymore.

Who even cares if he's running Honda. He's racing for Toyota and still under contract with McLaren, Honda not really sounding that logical to be honest.

So it’s basicly a true spec series now?

Yes. Ever since the introduction of the new chassis at the beginning of this year the cars are all the same.

Honda cares and Andretti run Honda engines in Indy which is who Mclaren paired with a year ago for the 500.

At that time McLaren was still partners with Honda and Alonso didn't have a Toyota contract ;-)
