Re: Renault V6 Power Unit

Post

Going through the list of component usage for the teams, Red Bull seem to have an abnormally high unreliability rate. The works Renault team, as of end of Monaco are still on their first elements. Mclaren have taken a second turbo for Fernando and a second control electronics for Stoffel. Apart from that, their still on the first of other elements. Bad coincidence for Red Bull, or could this point to an aggressive operations?
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

It was rumoured last year that Red Bull run their powertrain slightly hotter than Renault themselves, when they kept killing turbo's, could still be the case.

Renault called out Toro Rosso for not having enough cooling and not Red Bull.

Which Renault powered team has won a grand prix in 2018?
Which Renault powered team is currently 3rd in the constructors championship?

So what does it matter how many PU's they will go through if they win races and score more points. They will clearly be moving to Honda in 2019 as the relationship with Renault is untenable moving forward and the Honda PU and relationship is prospering.

Apparently it looks like Red Bull will be using the mgu-k from the first 3 races if possible to avoid a penalty. They see Canada as a possible win due to the hypersoft suiting their car.

he said ABOUT 1%.... The problem with a statement like that is, did he rounding up or rounding down? Is 2 or 3% around 1% ?

Cause if 1% is 10 HP then 3% is 30.

He did say it was worth 'about a tenth', which is probably a better unit for most people to grasp.
Especially as he was vague about the amount anyway.

It does seem that maybe the mgu-k from china is re usable but it is a big if and assessment will be carried out in FP1 and FP2.

Last the Red Bulls were 1 second slower than the pole position time, this year the gap was only 0,3s. Looking good for the rest of the year.

Last year RB had a chassis with initial issues. Not this time though

Horner mentions Austria where a Honda decision could be made.

For years now, Mateschitz is slowly trying to pull away from f1 and also because of the nature of Red Bull as a team, the future is inevitable. At some point a manufacturer will buy red bull.

Before i get into more details i will say that Aston Martin is a partner with red bull just for exposure, so in essence their involvement in f1 wont be bigger than this, because they are not an engine manufacturer and because they simply lack the money, even under the new proposed 150m euro budget caps.

Renault on the other hand is a manufacturer and has the money but they have their own team with their own ambitions, so the situation as it stands today, points out to an inevitable deal between Red Bull and Honda from 2019, also due to the fact that the new engine update for torro rosso in canada worked really well.

If you think about it, both Honda and Red Bull want F1 glory, one makes the body another the engine and in the future who knows, Honda might buy the team.

I do see a partnership for 2 seasons 2019+2020 between these teams, but I also see Porsche joining because F1 even with the current budget regulations offers much more exposure than wec ever did.

Will porsche buy red bull, who knows, but I suspect at the moment they are more inclined to see what is happening at force india.

---

All of the above points out to the fact that in order to score podiums in f1 you need to the either be a manufacturer or have exclusive partnerships with a manufacturer.

You have zero evidence for your claims, in fact the level of continued investment in the RedBull and Torro Rosso teams strongly refutes them!

Cyril Abiteboul latest hit :
Renault believes its latest Formula 1 engine upgrade is not being used to full effect by Red Bull because it lags behind the works team and McLaren in fuel development.
I was secretly hoping that Red Bull would have the pace to win,
They were very, very close to that, but not quite there.
"We have more to come, and they could have more to come from the fuel.
We know exactly what they [Renault's engines] are providing, and they are providing what we advertised they would a few weeks, if not a few months, ago.
just a fortnight before he will stop talking about RBR

The level of investment from Mateschitz has dropped significantly over the last 4 years, but overall the team had a healthy budget on the back of sponsorship deals like the one with Aston Martin.

This deal not only points to a lesser involvement from Red Bull GMBH, but also to an inevitable selling of the Red Bull team to one of the future manufacturers that will join F1.

Current engine formula showed us that as technology gets more expensive and complicated, private teams cannot compete with factory teams, the only exception in this case is when an engine manufacturer has an exclusive deal with a private team, exactly what Red Bull is wanting to achieve with Honda.

Such marriages can give great results, but eventually something will give in and the future of Reb Bull will either mirror the ones of Williams and Mclaren or it can become part of a factory team.

One last thing, regarding the the future of F1, both FOM and the majority of F1 fans want more teams on the grid. What kind of teams? FACTORY TEAMS

The best times in F1 have often been with only 1 factory team in Ferrari. Factory teams are highly volatile to motorsport series. They come in, spend money and then disappear leaving the sport worse off. The best series in the world don't have manufacturer teams. F1 in the 80's and 90's, Nascar, V8 supercars, GT3 and the BTCC were or are better because of a lack of official factory teams. Lmp1 is failing because of manufacturers pulling out and look at the manufacturer exit in F1 at the end of the naughties due to the GFC. Factory teams are not what FOM and the FIA should be looking for.

Red Bull are no less committed to F1 now then they have been in the past. Due to it's teams success and sponsorships it has not required to put as much money in to F1 as it did when it bought Jaguar and Minardi however Red Bull still markets the sport with demonstrations unlike many of it's fellow teams in F1. Honda don't have the want or ability to buy out an F1 team and they will be better off focusing on the engine then also having to worry about the whole car.
