A shameless image thread for the enginephiles

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Poor Jackie Oliver who thought he had finally made it big time, not to mention Stefan Johansson who drove the beast.

I wonder what John Barnard's reaction had been if Ron Dennis had given him these engines to work with?

coming back to my Fath URS theme:sorry only in german

holy s..t these were 4 guys 1 of them an engineer and they did everything themselves (only gears and modelmaking was outsourced) ...including building the bike itself(!) AND beat works outfit BMW who had dominated the sport for over a decade....

Interestingly Fath was voted "man of the year" in 1968 by britishmotorsports journalists -in germany he never got the recognition he deserved...it seemed not appropriate to beat famous "Wirtschaftswunder" BMW with a private-backdoor- effort ....Fath really is a hero to me .

ah and not to forget ..Helmut Fath was the inventor of the "Kneeler" sidecar layout as well...

@Sombrero;
Somehow it seems that the Alfa-engines began to look a lot better in the late 80s, first the 3.5 V10 and then a 2.65 Indy V8, perhaps losing Carlo Chiti helped? Compare with the 1982 1.5 V8 turbo below, attention to detail was terrible;

But wait a minute, how many cylinders is that?

This might be the worst thread ever started by the worst OP ever.. :lol: Totally kidding. Great thread X =D> . I haven't dabbled much in the engine sub-forum but I see I've been missing out.

@expensive - You mean, of course, the 8 xxxxxxxtors story ?

I remember as well the Boeing 767 (E32) ! and the two separate Bosch DME 3.3 for each bank... What about a V-16 McLaren F-1 or a BMW V-16 LM ? But I guess the M70 did the job perfectly...

IIRC Fath (Kuhn ?) proved that the BMW roller bearing big end could be made reliable at high rpm if its diameter was reduced
similarly the URS cranks had small (roller bearing) journals made possible by its cross-plane design (additional to central power takeoff)
........ like current Moto GP machines

kawi triple. The widowmaker

the engine is not that impressive by today's standards but couple it with period correct brakes and chassis and its becomes pretty scary. I will have one of these one day.

Kuhn was a collegue of Fath at MaxPlanck institute when both served an apprenticeship for toolmaking .Kuhn went on to become a mechanical engineer with INA (Schaeffler) and did the calculations for Fath .I´m not sure who of both had the
ideas -my gues is Fath was the driving force there.
that little monster was just so far ahead of its time .... BMW reportedly acknoledged they were a decade behind technologywise back then ...

Why make it simple, when you can make it so beautifully complicated?

Guy Negre's outrageous W12, it was actually tested, but never raced, in the AGS.
