A shameless image thread for the enginephiles

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

I'm always amazed when I see engines that didn't have cross flow heads, just seems so obvious these days.
What's obvious?

The layout was convenient from a packaging viewpoint, & the piston, cam, ports & valves don't care..

Considering how wide the engine bay's were back then I'd have thought space was not an issue.

Regarding cross flow, routing air and exhausts through and back out the same side of the engine is just inefficient for several reasons.

For starters, your incoming air is getting heated up by the exhausts costing power and efficiency.

That's no biggie, - cold air box & heat deflector... so, any other objections?

Well now you've thrown away any packaging benefits. =D>

this looks interesting

maybe the 18 deg valve inclination (lengthwise) gives more metal or coolant (than conventional) near/between inlet and exhaust ports

Hardly, they are a simple bolt on,
& of course, the oil filter, fuel pump & electrics - alternator, distributor, coil, HT leads & spark plugs..
- are all freely accessed on the other side of the engine...

Now djos, what were the supposed "inefficiencies" again?

WOW, alot of risk 'engine fire' then
It is not a problem with direct injection, but with carb...
Airflow should be big problem since its share certain space each other. Heat rejector only solve a few of its problem. However, it is classic isnt? Trial and error back day.

That shallow chamber with valves canted at an 18` included angle - was derided as not being a 'true hemi' TC,
but it is closer to modern practice, & still provides large diameter un-shrouded valves aiming flow towards the cylinder centre, & away from the walls, with the current Mopar 'Hemi' head design being similar, rather than the traditional wide-angle hemi, which needed heavy high-domed pistons to give good compression, & a more complex/expensive valvetrain..

What do you mean "a lot of risk"? Do you have fuel leaks in your car? Or exhaust leaks to provide flame?
It wasn't/isn't a problem in actual use.. or Chrysler wouldn't have built them & sold them to the public...
Image

& why "should" there be " a big problem" - with "airflow"?
Each cylinder runs a pair of independent ports, of correct size...& tuned induction/exhaust like-wise..

Those multiple Webers, & the glowing incandescent - tuned length headers - sure make for an impressive 'image'..
.. you surely must concede....

A 265 Hemi historic touring car racing mill, good for ~500 hp @ 8,000 rpm.. not too shabby for an N/A pushrod six
