Renault Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Just last week with the upgrade they downtalk it to only a tenth while not bothering to mention why it was only a tenth for them but 3 tenths for Renault and McLaren.

Ricciardo said the upgrade was 12 hp and Renault said the upgrade was 20 hp including new fuel:
12 hp for the engine (just like Ricciardo said) and 8 hp by the new fuel.
Where did you hear someone talking about three tenths?
Renault did not say it was 20hp, it is unheard of for teams to release exact power gains through upgrades. Those figures that you're touting are coming from the journalists/news companies.

AMuS. https://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/formel-1/red-bull/

Track specific obviously but in Canada it's (20bhp) worth about 3ths.

Oké, I just read the article and it says:

Während Renault 20 PS oder drei Zehntel gewinnt, sind es bei Red Bull 12 PS oder
auf die Rundenzeit umgerechnet 0,15 Sekunden.
It seems that on this track 20 hp is worth about 0,3sec. Thanks for the link from AMuS.

It's supposed to be more durable than the old unit. But theory and reality don't often coincide when it comes to these PU's.

Cyril said that the new unit required heavy chassis modification to be used.

I think RBR/McL got the software updates (modes) but didn't use the new hardware...

Cyril said it has nothing to do with the new MGU-K, it's all from the ICE, and all Renault powered teams are running the Spec 2 engine, so it's available to all.

Ok did a whole Bunch of cleaning up.

Quick reminder that this is a technical Thread about the Renault PU, everything else, like Update strategy for the Teams
has it's place in the Renault Team Thread or the respective Team's Thread. Also this is NOT the place to discuss Laptime, RB leaving to Honda, bash Cyril Abiteboul or just the general "Honda is better than Renault... no, Renault is better than Honda" circlejerk.

Keep it about the Hardware in here.

Haha how good!

Here's the new MGU-K finally. Oh sorry you need to alter your bodywork to utilise it. Sorry, we forgot to mention, ran out of time we could only tell our own chassis team at Enstone...

Dear me..

The quote in the 4th paragraph leads me to think that this news is from Austria.

if its lighter then better, anyone knows or an ideia of how much lighter it is?
Is it relevant?
If possible the car would run at the minimum limit. It would just be a matter of swapping ballast for benefit
I would expect a CoG gain from weight saving up high on the engine to be a huge boost. I believe the largest contributor to mechanical handling, in a pure sense, comes from the mass centroid axis.
MGUK is located about the same height as the crankshaft.
