Renault Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Tadaaa. My applause is usually reserved for original interviews and authors  The rest of the article, albeith not entirely related to this subforum, is also moderately interesting.
This sounds as though this is a really old article fluffed up to be current. The article is still saying the engine freeze is from 2023 when it is now 2022 and Taffin wouldn't be talking about "studying the Merc/Honda turbo concept" and that "it is a route we could possibly go down", they would be well and truly into development by now. In fact there is a photo of Alonso visiting Renault and it looks like a split turbo engine is on the dyno! Talk about a photo slip up! (apologies in advance, not aware of source) (see below)

Could be Renault's split turbo. Never saw their compressor or turbine alone before. They're always together. And this thing looks very different

I'm interested where you've got this pictures? Look like they are from a tour / visit or something like that...

So I wonder if this a split turbo or just a disassembled classic turbo, and if this is the front side of a turbine or the front/back side of a compressor... could also be a compressor airbox...
The part looks different from the older Renault turbines/compressors.. their last compressors are usually silver and the turbine is dark metal... and this thing seems to have a single entry/exit (the red capped part on the right of this turbo piece...)
If it's a compressor, its intake (the part that is covered with the big red cylindrical cap) seems to be smaller than the Honda or Merc compressor... :-k

The upper photo shows a split turbo setup with compressor (Compressore ) on the left and tubine (Turbina ) on the right. Don't ask me how I worked that out.

The lower photo shows a compressore nearest the camera and a twin entry turbine in the background. Can't tell if its split or not.

Perhaps I have misunderstood your question?

Nearly for sure, looks like it only has a single circumferencial exit, so it should be the compressor. The turbine should have two entries, one for each cylinder bank. Packaging a tuned exhaust with only one turbine intake, and make the gasses income in the orientation of the spinning... Looks like a nightmare.

Indeed.
Their 2014 turbo was single gaz entry and single air exit... and I dont see why they would revert back to a single entry turbine now. So yeah this is probably a compressor. And its single exit might mean they are changing their twin air air intercooler layout for a different charge air cooling.

Interesting. The compressor outlet is pointing in the wrong direction (up instead of down) so it's definitely a test unit.

A522 firing up.

Raspy sound, I don't know if it's good or not. Nevertheless, the sound seems edited, and they barely give anything away.

Is this a poorly photoshopped turbo? Really? :?

Alpine must have something up their sleeve...
