Mercedes Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

You mean the other way around?
Hmm. Actaully yes. Looking at the photo there is not much space above the cams. The rockers must be underneath the cams.
Desmo actuation? Torsion bar valve springs?

Neither. Pneumatic valve springs.

Are they mandated by the rules? Or just guessing?

PVS take up a fair bit of space, & are not really needed - for the lowish rpm limit of this engine formula.

I seem to recall one of the drivers last season, maybe Hulkenberg, had to pit to replenish the air supply for the valve system.

Pneumatic valves were first introduced by Renault on their V6 turbo in the 1980s. That also had a similar maximum rpm.

I've read on a dutch website that the Merc PU will have 50 hp more at the beginning of the season in comparison to Ferrari and Renault and that their peak performance will reach 1000hp on track this season. The source of this claim is from an Italian website, I remember it to be Motorsport Italia🤔

Mercedes will still be ahead, but how do they know it's exactly 50hp ahead of the others?

You're right. It probably won't be exactly 50 hp, but it's an indication of the advantage the Merc PU will have. Obviously we have to take it with a grain of salt and wait until Melbourne😉

Returns are in marginal terittory now. They didnt gain 50hp in 2017 as was speculated by pundits and they sure wont gain 50hp this year! Maybe 20hp to 30hp max.

Mercedes has made .7 second improvements from the power unit alone year on year. The fact they need so much less fuel than everyone else is a huge advantage, even if they make no power gains they're still ahead. But you're right, I suspect hunting for those last 30 or 40hp is going to get difficult from here on in.

There's a theoretical 1,000hp that's possible, everyone is now at least within 92% of that figure.

I thought they said their Hypercar (with a year or two old engine spec) already makes 1000hp? And that is definitely detuned compared to the current F1 spec PU.
So I see no reason why they wouldn't have passed that 1000hp mark a long time ago already (with the F1 car spec PU)

The way I read that post it says Merc will have 50 HP more than Ferrari & Renault at the start of the season. Not that they will gain 50 HP at the start of the season compared to end of last season.

It has three electric motors though. (Well four counting the MGU-h.)

RPM detuned maybe - but its not fuel flow limited either!!!

Someone at Mercedes told me they gained 50HP in 2017 from Fuel alone, so you are quite wrong.

It's still the best way to do it.
