Mercedes Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

5 litres consumption sounds about right to me. Assuming they use about 140 litres for the race, 5 litres is about 3.5% of fuel used. Although that is on the high side, you need to remember that a normal race engine with the same power would use about 240 litres of fuel and 5 litres would be 2% of fuel used.

From oil tank alone guaranteed minimum 5 liter, on engine May 4l. Off course if they can bleed oil to breather or compressor, they will get instant power in qualy but in race the effect would minimum. Wonder how they evaporate oil so it would effect power but not create deposit on jet chamber

so we're saying that in a race limited to 105 kg of hydrocarbon 'fuel' the eg Mercedes engines can burn around 109 kg of hydrocarbon ?

so when Mercedes talk about a bte of 49% is that a 'fuel' bte or a hydrocarbon bte ?

just asking ....... as I did 4 years ago

The hypothetical extra 4kg of hydrocarbon burns less efficient than the proper fuel - way less efficient. There is just more fuel to burn in addition to what you were burning under 100kg/hr fuel flow limit.

Back to the oil consumption figure. Shall we ask someone on the inside what the oil capacity and consumption is? Not that I don't trust guru but.. it would be great to get it from the source. Also it gives some more bones to pick.

The consensus seems to be that the the phase II PU doesn't produce more outright power than the phase one but can spend more time operating at the higher engine modes during its lifetime. So the extent to which it is an improvement ought to be more obvious in the races than in qualifying.

0w-5 roughly.
The thinner oil they tried last year was rumoured to be a 0w-0
