shock absorbers?

Post

Hi lads,

Is there anyone who knows a good site/article about shockabsorbers. Specially what effects the different parameters have. I know the shocks used in F1 and other raceclasses can be adjusted in many ways though it's hard to understand what it does accactly and how much they can adjust to it.

Thanks! :?:

Yup if anyonehas a site please post.....I have also a few things I'd like to know about dampers....especially what the following parametres are:

- rebound (fast and slow)
- bump (fast and slow)

I have read some things in Racecar Engineering (Magazine) but it doesn't really talk about adjustments and the car handling due to these parametres.

the Öhlins website is very informative ,you could download the pdf files for the TT44 damper (shock manual) this is a very interesting piece of modern car dynamics and as far as I am concerned I learned a lot from reading it .
You could think of dampers as a timing device .The damping forces delay the input and output of forces so as to manipulate the cars behaviour, being it low speed (damper speed) wich controls the shift of weight in the corners and pitch/heave and high dampershaft speeds which control the cars behaviour over bumps(surface irregularities or kerbs..)
It is a very complicated theme and one has to experience the effects of changing damper characteristics to believe what is possible.
It is quite easy to sort out the balance but to make the car really fast is what separates the gurus from the mere mortals....and believe me if you find the sweet spot for the driver, car trackand conditions on the day ,the circus is really flxing and your driver is all smiles and beaming...

Well, fast rebound and bump refers to characteristics to handle actual bumps in the road, like the one after Casino square in Monaco for example (although everybody tends to avoid it). Low speed bump and rebound occurs as cars go around corners, the roll characteristics.

hmm..you would not call that roll ,more the speed of weight transfer .
Except on very short input in a chicane the dampers would restrict the actual amount of roll.In all other cases where you get into some steady state cornering the amount of roll is determined by Springs ,Bars rollcentre location ,CG height and cornering forces(grip available).

Thanks for those links lads!

The Ohlins website has some great insights on dampers. And the other link was very interesting as well, not very detailed on the dampers but the other stuff on that site was a fun read too;)

Thanks,

I´d be happy to discuss these things in depth here if someone cares.Same goes for suspension geometries and all other technical related things.
Scarbs site is quite cool ,but unfortunatelly he stops where things get
exciting....but the pictures are outstanding....Iassume he keeps it simple
on purpose...

Would be very interesting Marcush, but I can start with a post about the basics within a few days. I learning a lot from various articles;) So maybe you can go into the topic a bit deeper after that?
