This should be a sticky. Based. While most people agree with Toto’s stance, because facts don’t lie, I still can’t understand why a tiny minority continue to hide what happened at Abu Dhabi 2021. They conveniently forget that Hamilton dominated the last four races, which included Abu Dhabi, building up to that moment. It’s telling when even Bernie Ecclestone, of all people, came out in support of Hamilton, stating that he was the real WDC winner. If the situation had been reversed, I would have supported Red Bull too, but that’s not what transpired. Stick to the rules, and let the facts speak for themselves.

What I can’t understand is why Mercedes chose to drop their legal case against F1, which clearly was the most straightforward, open-and-shut case in their favor. Even F1 had to apologize to Hamilton for their mistake. Probably the darkest day for F1 ever, which is why most still find it disgusting bringing up. I recall a few races back in 2024, you heard Crofty, Brundle, and Kravitz talk extensively during a race and all agreed it was a complete travesty against Hamilton.

So many things happened during that season that just pointing to one incident as the main incident for the outcome of the WDC is very narrow minded. If we then also take into account that after the season, journalists, team bosses (including Toto) pointed to Max as the best driver of 2021, I do not see any issue with the outcome of the WDC. The race itself is indeed debatable.

A championship decided under the safety car would have given the F1 series an image scandal. A red flag would have been a good solution, but that too would have brought conspiracy theories; are red flags used only because of Verstappen and Hamilton, which is also unfair to other drivers?

Did Masi have the power, as director, to make his decision about restarting the race as he wanted? Was he sacked because of the s*it storm?

I don't recall paddock wide consensus that Max was the better driver all season... Toto said Max was a deserving champion.

Toto also spent part of this year trying to woo Max away from RB so I'd be taking it with a grain of salt anything he said in favor Max re: the 21' season.

The simple truth of AD21 this is that Merc, while winning the race, the WCC, and WDC made choice for track position based on the standard operating procedures of an F1 race, in that they would either red flag or end under SC. No one at Merc could have guessed that a completely new and novel approach to F1 race management would happen. RB, did the only thing they could and got new tires. At the end of the day, the season hard fought and controversy filled as it was, came down to AD21 and it was one race for the championship. Similar to 24hr endurance, it's not about your you get to the last 30min, it's about how you finish.

LH and Max both earned their shots at the title and LH was the better driver in Abu Dhabi that night.

I remember, back in 2012, the Merc team thread was hell. Just endless trolls dumping on the team; it was all but impossible to have a technical discussion about the team's situation. Then Lewis was signed and the Lewis fans showed up en masse like a calvary. It was fun watching the horde of trolls be overwhelmed by an even larger horde, who wouldn't tolerate their man's team being put down.
It'll be interesting to see what the 2025 Merc team thread looks like. Will the trolls return? Maybe not. The Lewis fans haven't haven't defended the team as much since the W13 denied Lewis his retribution, but things are still nowhere near 2012. Merc also has 8 titles and *a lot* more fans of its own since those days. I'm actually more interested in how the Lewis fans and Tifosi get along. The Merc fans have a gratitude towards Lewis the Tifosi lack, and I don't see them being as forgiving if Lewis doesn't quickly bring glory to red.

Lucky for Max he won multiple WDCs or even talking about his only WDC would be banned even amongst his own fans lol.

I do think people really do underestimate how much love for Ferrari Charles has running through his veins.

I can't remember the last time I saw a driver be so devastated about not winning a constructors championship.

Back on the topic of Merc. I don't really think there's going to be much to talk about until George vs Kimi starts and merc do well/don't do well next year.

It seems this thread has been the least popular of the big teams this year (even behind AM) and without the Intrateam bickering about drivers/favouritism/meta commentary about Lewis and his fans, it wouldn't have a large portion of its posting activity.

I do not really see the difference you make to team Lewis, both 2012 and 2013, the Merc thread was 10 times more active than any other team thread and the yin yang was exactly the same, just with a little bit less hate.

Why should they? The team is not a mess and has no Schumacher.

In fact, the comparison between Rus and Ant will be very interesting. And that no one really cares about them will just help the thread.
