In my opinion, Mercedes being granted any ADUO at all significantly weakens the effectiveness of Ferrari's ADUO concession. It just means that Mercedes have to release all the updates as a single bigger PU update (PU 3 or PU 4) where Ferrari will likely introduce it in smaller steps (PU 3 and PU 4).

For Ferrari too, while it will be allowed two upgrades this season and two the next, the fact that Mercedes has some allowance for one upgrade each year will limit the progress it can make in relative terms.

It means Ferrari is no longer chasing a stationary target. So if Mercedes has plenty in its back pocket, Ferrari could find that it may not even get any closer even with the extra development opportunities it now has.

The ADUO outcome is one that, rather than helping Mercedes' rivals catch up as they had hoped, could now ultimately end up hurting them in keeping the status quo or even resulting in them falling further away.

While Mercedes and Red Bull have been supportive, Audi has reservations about cost implications in making change for next year while Ferrari has been concerned about what impact this could have on ADUO.

Ferrari's worry was that if everyone had been allowed to change engines for next year to accommodate an increase in fuel flow, then that would allow Mercedes to work more on its power unit. Better, in Ferrari's perspective, to keep things the same and not allow Mercedes any freedom.

But that view was based on Mercedes being deemed under ADUO the benchmark engine - so therefore not allowed any homologation upgrades.

Now things have changed and the door is open for Mercedes to make changes with or without any hardware revisions towards 60/40 in the rules.

The fact that an engine that achieved two podiums turned out to be better than the one that won all the races and all the sprints puts, for me, a tombstone on how this regulation was written and should open someone's eyes to how damaging it is for a sport to give participants veto power over the rules, as well as to use simplistic parameters for complex decisions that shift millions in investments.
That #RedBull pulled off half a miracle with the engine can be seen from the start of the season; I've always ranked it second, sometimes close to #Mercedes in that regard. But that Mercedes isn't the best engine-wise with what we've seen so far doesn't reflect reality.
I'm sorry because many will drag Kimi into all this too, who dominated yesterday on a track where the engine counts for little or nothing.

From my crude point of view, it looks like Lewis basically has a brake configuration that works great for qualifying but has worse race pace. It was quite clear that Charles was a lot faster in Monaco during the race. Feels like the effect is amplified in hotter conditions too

I would not be surprised if the race pace of Charles suffers because of the switch, which is a shame. It would make us the 4th faster team whenever Redbull and Mclaren manage to complete their weekends properly.

Since the brakes are used to help these Pirelli tires to warm up it could indeed be the reason Hamilton has worse deg overall under normal race conditions.

Are you assuming that cold brakes were the issue then..drivers can see and adjust temps...

CI discs are much larger and more powerful than Brembo discs.

It's a massive failure, the current dominating team has been granted ADUO while showing a clear advantage in electrical power, specially compared to Ferrari. I suppose it makes sense considering the tests are ICE only, but we don't know if the parameters are too simple and Mercedes may be hiding something from the test, not to mention the lack of testing on the MGU-K which might be much better than other teams.

But i digress, unless the Barcelona updates are a massive jump this season is already over for Ferrari, had a bit of hope that at least the constructors would be within reach in the future (kinda like 2024) with a better engine but i don't believe it now after Monaco.

I suppose it makes sense considering the tests are ICE only, but we don't know if the parameters are too simple and Mercedes may be hiding something from the test, not to mention the lack of testing on the MGU-K which might be much better than other teams.

The competition on the track may be over, but it is not over off track. It is 4 PU manufacturers against 1. It is time for the rest of them to take a unanimous position against what is happening right now. If they don't, then it will just be more of 2014-2020 style seasons. Different challengers but always a Mercedes engine on top.

It’s absolutely crazy that the brakes failed during the SC. Leclerc said 3 out of 4 brakes didn’t work as expected, with the rear ones not braking at all. Could have been extremely dangerous in a different situation.

It’s a frankly absurd situation, there’s no doubt about that.

Personally, I still think it’s better that Ferrari got two upgrades (and two more next year) - even though Mercedes get one each year - rather than getting one per year and Mercedes none. I know that flies in the face of most of the logic but it means that Ferrari can take incremental steps, rather than needing one big upgrade to do everything. Part of my thinking is based on an assumption that, given the time and upgrade opportunities, there’s no reason a company like Ferrari should not be able to at least match whatever Mercedes can come up with - at the end of the day, if they can’t, we don’t deserve to win.

I don’t want to only win because the others have been locked in (I also don’t want to lose because the others have done a dodgy compression ratio trick, but that’s a different story…)

The fundamental issue with ADUO is the fia hasn't shared the testing process with anyone, not even the teams. So no one can prove the fia tests are stupid (they likely are, and i would bet my next paycheck on it).

Last night, @Auto_Racer_it dropped a bombshell about Ferrari's braking issues: Brembo does seem to be the one responsible.

Since 2024, Leclerc has been complaining about brake problems. When Lewis Hamilton arrived, he pushed to work with Carbon Industries brakes, which are notably used at Mercedes.

But Ferrari has a contract with Brembo on many topics beyond F1, which the Italian company rather clumsily reminded everyone of yesterday.

And in the utmost secrecy, Maranello fitted Carbon Industries brake discs on Lewis's car, giving the British driver a lot more confidence and corroborating the good sensations described by Lewis.

Finally, we're learning that Leclerc will now test Hamilton's system starting in Barcelona.

That's undoubtedly why Brembo reacted quite brutally last night.

This is going to hurt that partnership very, very badly. I don't know how it's going to conclude, but it's a gigantic bombshell.
