Qualifying Notes

Felipe Massa qualified 15th and Lance Stroll 16th for the British Grand Prix
Both drivers went out in Q1 on the supersoft tyre, but quickly swapped the dry tyres for a set of intermediates as the rain continued to fall
Laptimes continued to fall as the track dried throughout the session, which allowed Fernando Alonso to set a time on the supersoft tyre at the end of the session. Alonso’s time pushed Lance down to P16 and out of qualifying. Felipe was able to make it through to Q2 in P13 with a 1:41.874
In Q2 the track had dried enough for Felipe to go straight out on a set of supersoft tyres. He used three sets of supersofts during Q2, however, he was unable to make it through to the final part of qualifying with a quickest time of 1:31.482


Paddy Lowe, Chief Technical Officer: It was a very tricky session for all the teams with the uncertain weather. We started Q1 on the supersofts, but it was immediately clear that there wasn’t enough grip and we went to the intermediates. After the session was briefly red flagged we went out on the intermediates again and Felipe set a reasonably safe time. Lance was just in, but was dramatically knocked out by Alonso’s lap on the supersofts. It was Lance’s first wet qualifying in a Formula One car, so it was a tricky learning curve for him. We ran three sets of supersofts with Felipe in Q2, as conditions became virtually dry. For some reason we weren’t able to show the pace we’ve seen throughout the weekend so far, so unfortunately, he was knocked out. We are all hugely disappointed as the strong pace of the car isn’t reflected in this grid today, but the car should be good tomorrow, and we’ll see what we can do from 15th and 16th.

Felipe Massa: I’m very disappointed with qualifying today. When you’re fighting for the top 10 in every session and then you get to qualifying and you finish 15th, it’s disappointing. I don’t know if it would have been enough to get me through to Q3, but I had a lot of traffic on my last set of tyres. We were quite tight with the time and I had to do an entire lap in the tow of a Toro Rosso. Without that traffic I could have done a clean lap at the best possible time in qualifying. I am disappointed but we’ll fight again tomorrow.

Lance Stroll: That was my first time in a Formula One car in the wet, and it was a really funny session with rain, drying conditions and intermediates. It was drying at the end and we had some graining on the tyres, so we couldn’t really go quicker. We got bumped by guys who put on slicks in the end and went quicker. I don't really count that as a normal qualifying where our pace is where we should be. It’s just disappointing. We only just missed out on Q2. We will see tomorrow what it will be like as the car is good in the dry.

Race Notes:

Felipe Massa finished 10th and Lance Stroll 16th in the British Grand Prix
Both drivers had a strong start to the race on the soft tyre, gaining several places to end lap one in P10 and P12, from 14th and 15th on the grid
Lance pitted for a new set of supersoft tyres on lap 22 and rejoined in P18. He was able to quickly pass Kvyat to move up to P17
Felipe pitted on lap 25 from P8. He rejoined the race in P14
Both drivers were able to move up the order as others pitted. Felipe was in P11, before the late-stopping Magnussen decided to come in, which moved Felipe into the points in P10
Lance wasn’t able to make his supersoft tyres last due to bodywork damage and was forced to pit on lap 42 from P14 and went on to cross the line 16th
Felipe kept the pressure on Perez for several laps, but he wasn’t able to make a pass in the closing stages and finished in 10th
Felipe is now 11th in the Drivers’ Championship, ahead of Lance in 12th. The team remains fifth in the Constructors’ Championship with 41 points


Paddy Lowe, Chief Technical Officer: We had planned to do a one-stop, starting on the soft tyre. From 14th and 15th that looked like the best way to try and gain some places. The race went reasonably to plan, the only issue was that the supersoft didn’t degrade in the way we had hoped for those around us in the first stint, as then we would have had an advantage in the closing stages. Felipe was able to challenge the two Force Indias at the end, but couldn’t overtake. Lance drove a good, solid race, but he suffered some bodywork damage, at which point he was losing too much laptime and was degrading the rear tyres. We pitted for another set, but it was a struggle to the finish. Overall, it’s a disappointing result at our home race. The car was quicker than our result would indicate. We need to learn from this experience and be better next time.

Felipe Massa: I’m definitely happy with the race after starting 14th, having had a very good start and opening lap, to finish 10th. For sure the most difficult part of the race was overtaking the Force Indias at the end. I was quicker, but maybe not quick enough to have the opportunity to overtake. I’m still not happy with the qualifying yesterday. When you start out of position things are a lot more difficult than they should be so today maybe we could have fought for more points. Unfortunately, starting 14th didn’t allow us to do that, but I’m happy with my race. We just need to make sure our starting position is better in the next race.

Lance Stroll: It was not a good race for us. The start was good and I moved up to P12. The first stint was also okay, and then also at the start of the second stint things weren't bad. But then we picked up some damage on the car, which I believe was a broken barge board. I started to feel something was wrong, we suspected it was the tyres and so I stopped again. However, this was for nothing really as it just got worse from there. I just brought the car home but some damage on the car destroyed our race. Now I’m just looking forward to Hungary.

According to Pirelli, the intention on Tuesday was to run a fully slick tyre test, with this going to plan as the weather remained dry. Temperatures rose in the afternoon, with a track temperature of 39 degrees seen at one point.

No times were released, as they aren’t important, but Pirelli say 225 laps in total were completed; 119 by Haas, and 106 by Stroll. Speaking afterwards, Giovinazzi said: “Long day today, but nice to be back in the car so soon after FP1. A long day, a lot of tyres, a lot of laps, but I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait for tomorrow.”

Haas & Williams run again on Wednesday, but rain is expected, meaning wet tyre compound work can be carried out.
