Mercedes AMG F1 W09 EQ Power+

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Looking at Mercedes' front wing, it looks awfully simple compared to Ferrari's, RBR's or McLaren's... even Renault...
They were the trendsetters with the tunnel on the FW - I am sure they are working on rear DF before updating the FW. Autosport reported something similar once they updated their diffuser. Have to maintain that balance between front and back.

Yeah, pretty much the same since 2015.
A Brawn/Merc tradition?

Now that I see these, the W08 nosecone & pylons look like a scaled down version of the BGP001. Agree with mantikos though.

Their chief designer, John Owen, has been at Brackely since the Honda days so maybe that's why the trend has not changed.

Perhaps the fundamental rule for front wing design is: first do no harm. They are conservative with the wing itself and spend lots of time/effort making sure they accurately understand how the downstream parts work with the wing. Probably sums up all of their aero.

A designer is not the aerodynamicist - Owens is responsible for module and component placement not aero philosophy

The aero guy has changed since the Brawn days

It looks simple now but actually when the Brawn came out its front wing was the most complex one!

Yeah. In 2009 they all had simple front wings.

Re: Brawn's front wing, I remember Brawn himself saying (with a smile on his face), during the double diffuser debacle, that the other teams were looking at the wrong end of the car. Nothing more, just that. Brawn's front wing was the starting point for the outwash designs once the other teams figured out that the double diffuser alone wasn't enough.

This may have been answered already, but do teams start off a race with the highest engine mode until there is a reasonable lead? I was rewatching the Spa 2017 highlights and I'd be very nervous if I were in a normal engine mode and the car behind is almost alongside and may have a higher engine mode on.

Yes, during starts or safety car restarts. This is the reason Rosberg couldn't build a gap to Hamilton in Spain 2016 start.

Beautiful picture, you can almost see how the air finds its way through that forest of winglets.

Looks like a city with those winglets and vanes lol.

Though aren't teams supposed to be more secretive? How do these pictures get taken?
