Potential return of Cosworth ?

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Potential return of Cosworth ?

Post

as a lot may know Cosworth have supplied engines to Aston Martin For a while I have recently been building some old Cosworth YB cranks for a job at work and when delivered one of the workers hinted at a possible return To F1 we asked about his opinion on Aston martins return to F1 and wondered if Cosworth had anything going on behind the scenes In terms of F1 Of which the worker smiled and said “They’re doing a lot “ this makes me wonder if Cosworth is lining up to return to F1 they will have knowledge of the V6 PU from 2014

I don't see it without significant investment. Cosworth are not a big company. Unless Stroll can get some sort of IP share from Mercedes but I think that's against the rules even on the PU side

It’s more of a question of what have Cosworth been doing for the last 6 years they have knowledge of the v6 pu as they where meant to supply in 2014 though never signed to a customer it was reported in 2017 that Cosworth where eyeing up a return for F1 with the new 2021 engine regs though them regs got pushed back to 2023-2025 and with Aston Martin having more involvement in F1 it’s very much possible that Cosworth have known if this and have just remained very quiet

Also, do Cosworth usually build as 'projects' for customers? I realise AM could well be a customer, but they seem to become interwoven with Merc.

They designed the v12 for the Valkyrie but as that project is now dead I don't know if they have any more connection to Aston.

I don't know if they ever designed a PU for 2014. They did "investigations" but so did Craig Pollock's Pure. To be competitive they'd need help to match the experience and investment of the big manufacturers - look how long it took Honda to catch up.

I suspect, if Cosworth has any involment in F1 at the moment, it's as a part supplier to one of the four current PU manufactures or doing reachers for a few parties if and how much it would cost to build a ICE (like McLaren, RedBull or the Enstone management).

It used to be quite normal for a big manufacturer to "order" a F1 engine from a specialist racing engine developer (like: Mercedes-Ilmore, Ford-Cosworth, Yamaha-Judd, TAG-Porsche etc etc)

How many wins did cosworth have in the 2.4Lv8 era?
How many on the 3L v10 era?
Cosworth are a non entity in F1 and have been of zero importance since 1995. Cosworth were only ever important when they were funded by a large amount of Ford money.

Cosworth would struggle just to make a half way decent mguk.

Linkage? All I can see is "Sources close to Aston Martin Racing" saying that the LeMans entry has been put on hold. Nothing about the car (and by engine) being killed.

Valkyrie isn't dead. The WEC entry is but the road car is still going on. They've been road testing the prototypes this year.

I heard 2014 v6 turbo reached a single cylinder test rig and a full complement of V6 production drawings.
If a manufacturer like Hyundai or Kia stepped in with funds for naming rights and maybe a transfer deal for hybrid tech, maybe.

Then a deal with a team must be struck also.

Edit, clarify.

One! 2003 Jordan Ford. Fisi won the Brazilian GP after the Alonso-Webber crash.

Exactly, 1 lucky win from 1996 to 2013 or so, basically a non entity
